Third quarter plagues Newton boys against No. 1 B-F

Cardinals suffer first loss against Class 3A competition

The Newton boys basketball team played right with Class 3A No. 1 Bondurant-Farrar for the first two quarters on Tuesday night.

Newton led 8-6 after one quarter, but B-F led by three at halftime. The Bluejays outscored the Cardinals 21-5 in the third.

Newton made a valiant comeback in the fourth with a 24-15 surplus, but it was not enough.

He’s now the school’s all-time leader in career assists with 251. Ingle passed Garrett Sturtz’s previous mark of 250.

The Cardinals (14-6) shot 32 percent from the floor, were 8-of-26 from 3-point range and buried 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Newton, which lost to a 3A school for the first time this season, had 16 assists on 17 field goals and committed only five turnovers.

Jaxson Fried led Bondurant-Farrar (20-0) with 21 points and eight rebounds and Colby Collison had 16 points and seven boards.

The Bluejays shot 51 percent from the floor, made 5-of-10 from 3 and connected on 13-of-18 from the foul line. They committed 11 turnovers and out-rebounded the Cardinals 31-25.

Cardinals earn No. 1 seed in 3A substate bracket

Newton earned the top seed in 3A Substate 6 and opens the postseason at home against Oskaloosa (3-18) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The winner of that game plays the winner between Washington (11-8) and Fairfield (11-9) on Feb. 23.

The other side of the bracket features ninth-ranked Mount Pleasant (17-5), Fort Madison (6-15), Solon (15-5) and Keokuk (7-14).

The Cardinals were scheduled to play at ADM of Adel on Thursday, but that regular-season finale was canceled due to weather and will not be made up.
