Newton boys can’t slow down Norwalk in LHC loss

Slow start plagues Cardinals in loss to Class 4A No. 7 Warriors

NORWALK — The Newton boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start and Norwalk had a strong shooting night on Tuesday during a 67-47 home win in Little Hawkeye Conference action.

The Class 3A No. 4 Cardinals trailed by 12 after one quarter and were outscored by eight the rest of the way.

Class 4A No. 7 Norwalk shot 56.5 percent from the floor and had a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint.

The loss snapped the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak and Norwalk completed the season sweep with the home triumph.

The Warriors (15-3 overall, 10-3 in the LHC) have won three straight against the Cardinals and are 11-1 in the last 12 matchups. Since Jan. 16, 2015, Newton is 2-16 against Norwalk.

Norwalk led 18-6 after one and went to halftime with a 34-17 advantage. The Warriors had a three-point surplus in the second half.

Brody Bauer led the Cardinals (12-5, 9-4) with 15 points and five rebounds. Tade Vanderlaan registered nine points, three rebounds and three assists and Jake Ingle collected nine points, two rebounds and three assists.

Cole Plowman, Newton’s leading scorer and rebounder, was limited to six points and five boards, Caleb Mattes scored four points, Carson Satterfield grabbed three rebounds and Drew Thompson dished out two assists.

The Cardinals shot 35.6 percent from the floor, made 8-of-24 from 3-point range and both teams were 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Newton committed seven turnovers.

Redek Born led everyone with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists and Braeden Carlson added 17 points and eight boards. Norwalk connected on 7-of-20 from 3 and committed five turnovers.

The Cardinals fell to 2-5 against 4A programs this season. They are undefeated against everyone else.
