Keith leads Newton girls to bowling win over Ballard

Cardinal boys stumble, fall to Bombers after lowest score of season

Libbie Keith had the best varsity series of the day to help the Newton girls bowling team stay unbeaten on Saturday.

The Cardinals’ varsity boys’ squad didn’t have the same fortune, rolled their lowest score of the winter and was downed by Ballard at Cardinal Lanes.

Keith rolled one of two 200 games on the varsity side and her 393 series was the winning score by at least 46 pins.

The Newton girls downed Ballard 2,496 to 1,857, but the Cardinal boys lost for the second time in a head-to-head matchup this year, falling 2,437 to 2,394.

Keith had single games of 185 and 208 to lead all Newton bowlers. She won the day with a 393 series.

Genessa Slings and Gabbie Humphrey were next for the Cardinal girls. Slings put together single games of 170 and 177 for a 347 series and Humphrey posted single games of 146 and a career-best 190 for a 336 series.

Newton (7-0) had the six top scores in the varsity girls competition. The Cardinals’ 2,496 was their fourth best score of the season.

Beka Weithers, Bailey Hansen and Nevaeh Bown were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Weithers rolled single games of 175 and 145 for a 320 series, and Hansen went 143 and 173 for a 317 series. Bown turned in a 136 and a season-best 159 for a 295.

Newton’s top two junior varsity bowlers were Skyler Gooden and Maria Baxin and they posted series scores of 271 and 254, respectively. The Cardinal girls’ JV won 1,692 to 1,583.

Joni Kusel led Ballard (3-4) with a 280 series in the varsity matchup.

The Newton varsity girls posted Baker scores of 163, 155, 173, 160 and 132 with Keith, Slings, Humphrey, Hansen and Weithers.

Leading the Newton boys varsity (5-2) was Jordan Killmer, who finished second overall with a 365 series. He had single games of 179 and 186.

Finishing fourth was Andrew Wiles with a 327 series. He had single games of 170 and 157.

Austin Kennedy (306), Logan Bown (305), Tamion Adams (288) and Alex Kearse (255) completed the Newton varsity boys’ lineup.

Ballard  (4-3) was led by the overall winner, Ian Godbold, who posted a 212 single game and a 367 series.

The Cardinals’ varsity score was their worst of the season by 269 pins. The Newton JV downed Ballard 2,576 to 2,196.

Kinnick Pritchard had the top overall score for the day with a 426 series. He posted single games of 197 and 229. Owen Guldberg (340), Landon Gooden (339) and Tyler Padgett (321) also had scores that were better than several varsity bowlers.

Killmer, Wiles, Kennedy, Guldberg and Pritchard participated in the Baker games for the varsity boys and that group posted scores of 159, 175, 133, 204 and 132.
