Newton wrestling falls just short against Oskaloosa

Cardinals finish 13th at Ottumwa Invitational

OSKALOOSA — In a back-and-forth battle, Newton’s wrestling team fell a little short of its first conference dual victory on Thursday.

The Cardinals rallied from two separate holes only to lose the final three matches of the night during a 39-36 road loss to Oskaloosa.

The Little Hawkeye Conference dual came down to the final match and it was as close as it could have possibly been.

Both teams took one forfeit and they were 6-6 in contested matches. The Indians won the dual because they had one more pin than the Cardinals.

Newton (1-5 overall, 0-4 in LHC duals) trailed 12-6 and 18-12 but rallied to go up 30-18 and 36-23 but was unable to finish off the win.

Avery White (152), Wyatt Weter (182), Mitchell Thayer (220) and Seth Adams (126) all won by fall, while Lucas Cockerton (106) and Kaiden Rogers (113) each won by decision. Thomas Stadelmann (285) accepted a forfeit.

Cockerton won 13-12 at 106 and Rogers claimed a 9-2 victory at 113. Oskaloosa won a match 8-6 that it trailed 5-2 in.
