Newton, Colfax-Mingo girls face tough field at Ogden

Five Cardinal grapplers place eighth in weekend tournament

OGDEN — The Newton and Colfax-Mingo girls wrestling teams faced a tough field at Ogden on Saturday and three grapplers finished in second place.

The Cardinals were eighth overall in the 32-team field despite entering just five wrestlers into the field. Colfax-Mingo brought seven grapplers and finished 15th.

Led by Jessie Hutchinson and Elizabeth Elliott, Newton scored 85 points in eighth and Emma Cook led the Tigerhawks to a 59-point day.

Second-ranked Osage won the team title with 250 points. Seventh-ranked Ridge View (192), Dallas Center-Grimes (150), Perry (133) and ninth-ranked Spencer (120) completed the top five.

Hutchinson, Elliott and Cook all were second in their respective weights. Colfax-Mingo’s Lily Webster placed fourth and Newton’s Stella Cupples and Abby Chance both were sixth.

Elliott and Webster competed at 100 pounds and the bracket featured three ranked wrestlers. Second-ranked Elliott downed seventh-ranked Webster 9-2 to advance to the championship match.

Elliott (15-1) suffered her first loss of the season when she was pinned by top-ranked Gable Hemann (27-1) of Osage. Elliott was 2-1 for the day with a pin.

Webster (20-4) was fourth after splitting her final two matches. She finished with two pins.

Hutchinson was the runner-up at 170 after a 3-1 day. She won three times by fall and her lone loss came against ninth-ranked Autumn Elsbury (21-3) of South Tama County. Hutchinson (12-5) won three times by fall.

Cook (17-4) won her first two matches by fall at 235. She lost in the championship bout by pin to top-ranked Olivia Huckfelt (23-0) of Spencer.

Newton’s other three wrestlers were Cupples, Chance and Brianna Aebischer.

Cupples (16-6) finished sixth at 120 after going 3-2 and winning three times by fall. Chance (16-7) was sixth at 155 following a 3-3 day and three wins by pin. Aebischer (10-7) was 1-2 at 145.

The other five Tigerhawks were Devin Chadwick, Cadence Linn, Amelia Strickland, Shy Steck and Joslyn Dawson.

Chadwick finished eighth at 115 following a 2-3 day. She pinned Linn in the second period. Steck (14-10) took eighth at 130 after a 2-3 day. Strickland (6-3) won one match at 120 and Dawson (13-9) and Linn both were 0-2.
