Newton boys start fast against Oskaloosa, claim fifth straight win

Cardinals cruise past Indians, improve to 4-1 in conference play

The Newton boys basketball team stayed near the top of the Little Hawkeye Conference after a fast start led to an easy home win over Oskaloosa on Friday night.

The Cardinals held a big advantage at halftime and never looked back during a 61-39 victory. It was the fifth straight win for Newton, and it is now 4-1 in conference play.

Cole Plowman had 22 points, six rebounds and three blocks and Brody Bauer added 16 points, nine boards and four assists to lead the Cardinals. They played their second straight game without starting point guard Jake Ingle.

Newton (5-2) led 22-7 after one quarter and went in front 34-12 at halftime. Both teams scored 27 points in the second half.

Nate Lampe finished with four points, three rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Drew Thompson added three points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals, Carson Satterfield chipped in three points, two rebounds and three steals and Tade Vanderlaan registered three points and three boards.

Kacey Sommars scored four points and Caleb Mattes put in three points off the Cardinal bench.

The Cardinals shot 45 percent from the floor, made 6-of-19 from 3-point range and connected on 9-of-13 from the free-throw line. They committed 15 turnovers.

Oskaloosa fell to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
