Newton bowlers cruise past Pella Christian

Cardinals improve to 4-0 in head-to-head competition

The Newton bowling teams were not at their best on Saturday against Pella Christian.

But the Cardinals still easily took down the Eagles despite the visitors rolling a pair of season-best team scores at Cardinal Lanes.

Both Newton varsity teams improved to 4-0 in head-to-head competition and the Cardinal girls stayed unbeaten with a pair of dominant wins.

The Newton boys bowling team defeated Pella Christian 2,788 to 2,170 and the Cardinal girls downed the Eagles 2,364 to 1,939.

Both Cardinal junior varsity boys squads were better than Pella Christian’s varsity, too. They turned in scores of 2,522 and 2,496.

The varsity boys had six of the top seven scores in their matchup and five JV bowlers had a 300 series or better, too.

Leading the way with the top score for the day was Jordan Killmer. He rolled single games of 226 and 205 for a 431 series.

Tamion Adams started with a 177 and then rolled a career-best 223 for a career-best 400 series.

Austin Kennedy and Sebastian King finished third and fourth, respectively. Kennedy rolled single games of 218 and 156 for a 374 series and King had a 167 and a 187 for a 354 series.

Andrew Wiles made his season debut and placed sixth overall with a 322 series. He had single games of 136 and 186.

Logan Bown capped the varsity boys with a seventh-place finish. He had a 316 series with singles games of 130 and 186.

Pella Christian’s Andrew VanKooten was fifth overall with a 324 series and Evan DeJong had a 315 series. The Eagles fell to 0-5.

The Cardinals led 1,881 to 1,448 after the first round. Newton’s Baker score was 907 and it had games of 203 and 200.

Newton’s top JV team had a team score of 2,496 with David Holmes, Alex Kearse and Kinnick Pritchard registering series scores of 367, 362 and 350, respectively.

The second JV team had a score of 2,522 and Jarett Sweeney (324) and Nathan Hauber (313) led the way.

The Cardinals varsity girls squad led 1,600 to 1,257 after the first round. Newton outscored the Eagles 764-682 in the Baker games.

The Cardinals’ best Baker game was a 190 and Newton had six of the top seven individual scores.

Beka Weithers led the way for Newton and tied for first overall with a 347 series. She had single games of 186 and 161.

Bailey Hansen and Libbie Keith tied for third with a 338 series. Hansen totaled single games of 165 and 173, while Keith had single games of 184 and 154.

Gabbie Humphrey rolled single games of 146 and 155. She placed fifth with a 301 series.

Olivia Pickerell and Genessa Slings finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Pickerell had single games of 145 and 131 for a 274 series, while Slings’ singles games were 104 and 137 for a 241 series.

Pella Christian (1-4) was led by Alexa Klaasen, who tied Weithers in the top spot with a 347 series.

Newton’s top two JV scores came from Maria Baxin (302) and Skyler Gooden (236).
