PCM boys fall to Perry, North Mahaska

Mustangs plagued by turnovers in pair of defeats

PERRY — The PCM boys basketball team fell behind early and never recovered during a 72-60 road loss to Perry on Tuesday.

The Mustangs trailed by six after one and went into halftime down 43-29 during the Heart of Iowa Conference matchup.

PCM outscored the Bluejays by two in the second half.

The Mustangs lost despite shooting 52 percent from the floor and out-rebounding the hosts 37-20.

They were 7-of-19 from 3-point range and made 3-of-5 from the free-throw line but committed 22 turnovers.

Perry (2-3 overall, 1-3 in the HOIC) had a significant advantage at the line, making 14-of-22 and also hit 8-of-11 from 3 while shooting 57 percent from the floor.

Jacob Wendt led the Mustangs (2-5, 1-3) with 20 points, 17 rebounds and three assists, while Gavin Van Gorp had 15 points and two rebounds.

Chase Wagaman tallied eight points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench, Grant Van Veen tallied six points, six rebounds and two assists and August Stock scored four points, grabbed seven boards and delivered three assists.

Gavin Steenhoek added three points and four assists off the bench. PCM was without starting point guard Kaleb DeVries.

Five Bluejays scored in double-figures, led by Brandon Mahler’s 18 points and five assists. They used just six players in the game.

Geren Kenney had 14 points and seven rebounds, Owen Myers had 12 points and four assists, Drake Levan tallied 11 points and six assists and Holden Smith chipped in 11 points and four helpers.

North Mahaska 75, PCM 46

MONROE — Another slow start plagued the Mustangs during a non-conference game against North Mahaska on Monday.

PCM trailed by 13 after one and couldn’t rally during a 75-46 loss to the Warhawks.

The Mustangs hit 42 percent of their shots but were just 3-of-20 from long range and connected on 1-of-6 from the line. They also committed 20 turnovers.

Van Gorp led PCM with 13 points and three rebounds, Wendt had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Wagaman scored a career-high 10 points and dished out two assists off the bench.

Van Veen added five points, six rebounds and two blocks, DeVries chipped in three rebounds, four assists and two steals and Stock and Steenhoek each grabbed two boards.

The Warhawks (5-2) shot 54 percent from the floor and made 11-of-19 from 3. They also out-rebounded PCM 32-25.

Nolan Anderson led the visitors with 17 points and five rebounds, Lane Harmon tallied 16 points and five assists and Nash Smith collected 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. Braden Steel also grabbed nine boards and dished out eight assists.
