Fast start helps Newton boys down rival DCG

Ingle, Bauer combine for 37 points in Cardinals’ road win over Mustangs

GRIMES — A fast start was all the Newton boys basketball team needed against Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday. Nine made 3-pointers was icing on the cake though.

The Cardinals jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter and coasted from there during a 65-54 road win over last year’s Class 3A state champions.

It was Newton’s first win over the Mustangs in their last six meetings.

“This year’s senior class had never beaten DCG until now. Every time they got close, we hit a big shot,” Newton head boys basketball coach Jason Carter said. “We were solid defensively and got off to a strong start.”

After the first quarter, DCG outscored Newton by two points. The Cardinals had a 9-3 advantage in made 3-pointers and were 14-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Jake Ingle was 4-of-8 from long range and led the Cardinals with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Brody Bauer hit 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and registered 17 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Tade Vanderlaan finished with nine points and four boards, Carson Satterfield tallied seven points and two rebounds and Kacey Sommars added six points and two assists.

Drew Thompson also scored three points and delivered two assists.

Sommars provided Newton with a lift off the bench on both ends of the floor. Cole Plowman was limited to three points, five rebounds and three assists due to foul trouble.

“Jake carried us in the first half,” Carter said. “Cole got into foul trouble in the second and picked up his third foul 10 seconds into the third. Kacey gave us some big minutes. He had some muscle inside and made their big guy work.”

DCG’s big guy is Calix Cahill, who led the Mustangs with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Jonathan Howard added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals for the hosts.

Newton shot 49 percent from the floor and was 9-of-20 from 3 compared to DCG’s 40 percent from the floor and 3-of-13 from long range.

Newton (1-2 overall, 1-1 in the LHC) turned the ball over 15 times but out-rebounded DCG 24-16.

The Mustangs were 13-of-22 from the line and committed 10 turnovers.

DCG (2-1, 1-1) dropped to 14-5 against Newton since 2014. It came into the game winners of five in a row against the Cardinals but fell to 10-3 since 2017.

“They used a full-court press to speed us up,” Carter said. “We either turned the ball over or hit a big shot. We weren’t happy with the turnovers but were happy they found a way to win on the road.

“That’s exactly what we expect to see from seniors. They kept their composure.”
