Cardinal volleyball places eighth at LHC tournament

Newton loses early lead against Pella Christian, falls to Grinnell in straight sets

INDIANOLA — Newton’s volleyball team couldn’t find the win column at the Little Hawkeye Conference tournament on Thursday.

The Cardinals went 0-4 on the day and lost three matches in straight sets. Newton was defeated in the eighth-place match by Grinnell just two days after it downed the Tigers in three sets during their conference match.

Newton’s best match of the night came against Pella Christian. The Cardinals lost to the Eagles despite winning the first set.

Pella Christian, which went on to finish third in the tournament, rallied for a 21-23, 21-9, 15-10 win over the Cardinals.

Class 4A No. 8 Norwalk swept Newton 21-14, 21-9, Oskaloosa defeated the Cardinals 21-11, 22-20 and Grinnell got some revenge during its 25-9, 25-18 win.

Host Indianola defeated Oskaloosa to win the tournament championship. Pella Christian downed Dallas Center-Grimes in the third-place match and Pella bettered Norwalk in the fifth-place match.

In the loss to Pella Christian (20-11), Macy Lampe finished with 10 digs, seven assists and two kills, Kadance Ahn had seven kills and 14 digs and Chloe Swank registered 14 digs.

Delaney Woollums added four kills and six digs, Emily Wermager contributed four assists and four digs and Hailey Sumpter registered three digs.

The Cardinals (7-21) were 41-of-43 in serves with Sumpter serving 10-of-10, Ahn finishing 9-of-9 and Woollums going 8-of-8.

In the loss to Norwalk (18-10), Ahn had seven kills and five digs, Lampe collected 10 assists and two kills and Swank chipped in nine digs.

Wermager dished out three assists and had four digs, Audrey Rausch finished with three kills and three digs and Woollums tallied two kills and four digs. Chloe Rorabaugh contributed two digs.

The Cardinals were 20-of-23 in serves with Sumpter serving 7-of-7.

Against Oskaloosa (21-10), Ahn put down seven kills, had three digs and served up two aces, Lampe collected six assists and five digs and Rausch had two assists and three digs.

Woollums collected four kills and two digs, Sumpter chipped in four digs and two aces, Wermager dished out four assists and Swank had two digs.

The Cardinals were 31-of-32 with five aces.

In the loss to Grinnell (10-18), Ahn led the way with seven kills, two blocks and four digs, Woollums had four kills and six digs and Swank finished with six digs.

Lampe dished out eight assists and had two digs, Wermager delivered three assists and chipped in two digs, Rausch and Sumpter each tallied three digs and Rorabaugh added two blocks.

The Cardinals were 28-of-29 in serves. Sumpter served 10-of-10 and Rausch was 7-of-7.
