Loaded field meets L-S harriers at Williamsburg

State-ranked Smock leads Hawks at Williamsburg Sports Complex

WILLIAMSBURG — Lynnville-Sully’s cross country teams faced its toughest competition of the season on Tuesday.

Nine boys’ ranked squads and five ranked girls’ teams made their way to Williamsburg Sports Complex and competed in the 5K races.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls were ninth in the 13-team field and the Hawk boys were 12th in the 14-team field. L-S did not have the services of No. 1 runner James Gruver, who is out with an injury.

Class 1A No. 17 Greenlee Smock led the Hawk girls in fifth. She finished in 19 minutes, 59.01 seconds.

Olivia Norrish was next in 35th with a time of 22:25.55. Kendra Fikse (24:47.61) finished 62nd, Corrina Rozendaal (25:47.69) was 70th and Laura Fikse (26:42.14) came in 75th as the final scoring runners. Brooke Conover (27:24.39) was the lone non-scoring runner in 78th.

Class 3A No. 1 Pella won the girls’ meet title with 53 points. Second-ranked Mount Vernon-Lisbon was the runner-up with 65 points. Fourth-ranked Solon (67), 2A No. 10 Williamsburg (95) and 2A No. 4 Tipton (104) completed the top five. Lynnville-Sully scored 239 points in ninth.

Class 3A No. 2 Lourdes Mason of Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the girls’ 5K race in 18:41.42. Class 3A No. 13 Marissa Ferebee of Pella was the runner-up in 19:31.65 and fifth-ranked Kayla Young of Solon took third in 19:35.41. Class 3A No. 9 Laura Swart of Mount Vernon-Lisbon was fourth in 19:43.35.

The Hawk boys were led by Zach Morningstar, who was 26th in the boys’ race. He finished in 17:44.75.

Hendrick Lowry finished 37th in 18:12.13. Ethan Dunsbergen (22:11.25) was 89th, Evan Fikse (24:59.69) placed 97th and Will Conover (27:58.15) crossed the finish line in 100th.

Class 3A No. 2 Pella won the boys’ meet title with 42 points. Ninth-ranked Mount Vernon-Lisbon (91), 2A No. 5 Danville-New London (111), 2A No. 2 Tipton (112) and 3A No. 15 Solon (132) completed the top five.

Class 3A No. 16 South Tama County (141) was sixth, Vinton-Shellsburg (164) placed seventh, 2A No. 10 Pella Christian (183) ended up eighth and 2A No. 17 Williamsburg (246) came in ninth.

Class 1A No. 14 North Mahaska placed 11th with 285 points. L-S was 12th with 325.

Class 3A No. 6 Chase Lauman won the boys’ race in 16:26. Fifth-ranked Tommy Tyynismaa of South Tama was the runner-up in 16:32.2 and No. 8 Canaan Dunham of Pella finished third in 16:37.99.
