L-S’ Smock, PCM’s Teeter lead area girls at Pleasantville

Three Mustangs register top-20 finishes

PLEASANTVILLE — Lynnville-Sully’s Greenlee Smock put together another career-best performance on Monday and it was good enough to take runner-up honors at the Pleasantville Cross Country Invitational.

Smock and PCM’s Abi Teeter were the lone medalists from the area at Pleasantville Golf & Country Club. The field included three ranked teams in Class 1A.

Class 1A No. 5 Maddy Childs of Grand View Christian won the girls’ 5K race in 19 minutes, 1.42 seconds. Class 1A No. 11 Smock was the runner-up in a career-best 19:29.58.

Greenlee looked really strong once again and I believe with a little closer contact to the leader right away at the start of the race, there may have been a different outcome,” L-S cross country coach Darin Arkema said. “I do believe the course probably still ran a bit on the short side for the high school but much closer to 5K distance than some years in the past. Even with that, I think that if you calculate out to full 5K distance at the speed they were running you would come up with a lot of PRs.”

Teeter also ran a career-best time as she was fourth in 21:13.61. That led PCM to a fifth place team finish.

Class 1A No. 11 Grand View Christian won the team title with 62 points. Class 1A No. 12 Martensdale-St. Marys was second with 76 and 1A No. 16 Central Decatur finished third with 82.

Montezuma (103) and PCM (123) completed the top five and the rest of the 12-team field included Wayne (179), Lynnville-Sully (190), Pleasantville (201), Saydel (230), Interstate 35 (238), Colfax-Mingo (249) and the Chariton JV (291).

Several PCM runners turned in season- or career-best times. After Teeter in fourth was Reagan Vannoy in 19th in 22:47.22 and Makayla True in 20th in 22:53.29.

The other two scoring runners were Jillian Fairbanks (24:57.63) in 44th and RIley DeVore (25:08.48) in 46th. Alyce Engle (25:13.22) and Alexis Fagg (27:10.85) were 47th and 70th, respectively, as non-scoring runners.

Lynnville-Sully only had five runners in all. After Smock was Kendra Fikse (23:49.61) in 30th, Brooke Conover (25:31.21) in 55th, Corrina Rozendaal (25:41.97) in 59th and Laura Fikse (27:15.47) in 72nd.

Colfax-Mingo’s top finisher was again Shae Wilkins and she was 23rd in 23:02.76. The Tigerhawks also had just five runners total and the others included McKenna Pleima (25:17.09) in 50th, Devan Chadwick (25:41.82) in 58th, Lilyan Hadsall (27:14.88) in 71st and Mallory Sipma (32:41.78) in 97th.
