PCM volleyball avenges early-season loss to Saydel

Mustangs sweep host Eagles in conference opener

DES MOINES — PCM’s volleyball team couldn’t hold an early lead during a previous match with Saydel back in August.

The Mustangs made sure that didn’t happen again on Thursday. The second meeting between the two schools resulted in a three-game sweep of the Eagles.

PCM opened its Heart of Iowa Conference schedule with a 25-10, 27-25, 25-16 road victory over Saydel.

“It felt good to come out strong for this conference win,” PCM volleyball coach Sarah De Vries said. “For the most part, we were in control of the match and with good passes we were able to execute our attack at the net.”

Unoffically, Riley Johannes and Addison Steenhoek each had seven kills to lead the Mustangs (3-6 overall, 1-0 in the HOIC). Elle Davis added six kills and RaeAnn Duinink registered a career-high 22 digs.

Sidney Shaver dished out 12 assists and Eliana Buswell tallied six assists and served up four aces as PCM continued with its 6-2 formation.

“We had a few too many errors that had us fighting for points in the second set, but the girls fought back hard and were able to finish with a win,” De Vries said.

Caydance Sharp led Saydel (3-4, 0-1) with 16 digs, Grace Park had 11 assists and Paige Rummans tallied four kills and five digs.
