Baxter softball, baseball end season with first-round losses

Bolts fall to Colo-NESCO, state-ranked Ankeny Christian Academy in postseason play

BAXTER — A fast start was not enough for Baxter’s softball team in the Class 1A Region 4 opener on Friday.

The Bolts scored three runs in the first inning and led 3-2 after four but fell 7-6 to Colo-NESCO at home.

Baxter won both regular-season meetings, but the Royals eliminated the Bolts in the opening round of the postseason after scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Colo-NESCO out-hit the Bolts 10-7 and both teams committed four errors.

Ally Padget, Mandee Selover and Lydia Pierce all had two hits for Baxter (5-19), while Elie Tuhn had the other hit.

Pierce tripled, scored two runs, had two RBIs and stole two bases, Padget and Selover both doubled and scored one run, Selover stole one base and Padget added an RBI.

Lilie Vansice and Adison Bonney each scored one run and stole one base, Allison Colyn was hit by a pitch and Klaire Shanks had an RBI.

Kinley Bethards started in the circle and took the loss after allowing five runs — one earned — on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. She struck out one and walked five.

Pierce tossed the final 2 1/3 innings and surrendered two runs — zero earned — on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Rylee Upchurch had two hits, two walks and one run to lead Colo-NESCO (8-20) at the plate.

Callie Kohlwes struck out nine and allowed one earned run to claim the pitching win. She walked none and hit one batter.

BASEBALL

Ankeny Christian Academy 9, Baxter 3

URBANDALE — Rory Heer and Cody Damman combined for five of the team’s six hits, but Baxter’s baseball team was limited to three runs against Class 1A No. 9 Ankeny Christian Academy on Saturday.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first three innings and plated three more in their final at-bat during a 9-3 home win in the Class 1A District 13 quarterfinals at Northview Park.

The Bolts (6-15) scored one run in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough. The Eagles out-hit the Bolts 8-6 and both teams had one error.

Heer finished with three hits, two runs, two steals and one walk in his final prep game. Damman registered two hits and two RBIs.

Perrin Sulzle finished with one hit and one RBI and Cael Wishman scored one run.

Cael Shepley started on the mound and took the loss after allowing six runs — four earned — on five hits in five innings. He struck out five, walked five and hit one batter.

Sulzle tossed the final inning and surrendered two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Eli Christensen had two triples, two runs and four RBIs to lead the Eagles (25-1) and Tyler Mahoney added three hits and three runs.
