Newton baseball blows past Marshalltown

Cardinals start slow, still down Bobcats in five innings

MARSHALLTOWN — A slow start didn’t hinder Newton’s baseball team on Thursday.

The Cardinals faced Marshalltown in a non-conference road game and downed the Bobcats 13-0 in five innings. The game was scoreless after two.

Newton cranked out 13 hits and did not commit an error and Riley Mouchka went the distance on the mound.

The Cardinals improved to 13-9 following the win. It was the second straight victory over Marshalltown (3-26).

A six-run third broke a scoreless game and the Cardinals added three in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game early.

Turner Williams improved his team-best batting average to .444 with three hits. He doubled and scored two runs. His 20 runs scored ranks second on the team.

Brody Bauer had two hits, three runs and two RBIs. He now has a team-best 24 runs this summer.

Evan Grimm and Tade Vanderlaan both had two hits and two RBIs and Kacey Sommars, Eli Stewart, Kael Swarts and Drew Thompson all finished with one hit.

Sommars doubled and had four RBIs. He improved his team-high RBI total to 28.

Swarts tallied one hit, one run and one RBI, Braydon Chance was hit by a pitch, scored two runs and had one RBI and Thompson’s hit was a double. Garrett Beerends was hit by a pitch, Cole Swank had one run as a pinch runner and Alex Thomason scored one run as a courtesy runner.

Mouchka (3-2) earned the pitching win after allowing no runs, five hits and one walk. He struck out five.
