Mustangs claim two conference wins in light week

PCM’s baseball team downs Greene County, Perry in HOIC play

PERRY — Eighth-grader Shay Burns got a win in his varsity pitching debut and his teammates helped him out at the plate with 12 hits as PCM’s baseball team downed Perry 14-4 in five innings on Wednesday.

The Mustangs won the Heart of Iowa Conference game thanks in part to three runs in the second, three in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Burns (1-0) pitched into the fifth inning and won his first career varsity pitching start after allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five, walked two and hit one batter.

Easton Webb got the final two outs, one of which came by strikeout. He also had three hits, one double, one run and one walk at the plate.

Durant Van Dyke, Nick Farver and Trigg Steenhoek each collected two hits.

Van Dyke doubled and added two runs, two RBIs, one walk and one steal. He now has 11 runs and 10 RBIs on the season, which both rank second on the team.

Farver chipped in three runs, one walk and two steals. His 21 runs and 10 walks lead the team.

Steenhoek doubled and had two RBIs, Gabe Hobbs finished with one hit, one run, one RBI and two steals and Burns tallied one hit, one run, one RBI and one steal.

The other hit came from Will Owens and it was a double. Gavin Fenton walked once, was hit by a pitch and scored one run, Kaleb DeVries walked twice and scored two runs and Jacob Wendt was hit by a pitch and scored one run. Adrien Robbins scored one run.

The two walks improved DeVries’ on-base percentage to a team-best .571. He’s drawn seven walks in 10 games.

PCM (10-7 overall, 8-3 in the conference) swept the season series with the Bluejays, outscoring them 29-4.

Perry (1-15, 1-10) was led by Kane Killmer’s two hits, one run and one RBI.

PCM 7, Greene County 3

JEFFERSON — PCM let an early lead against Greene County get away during the two team’s first meeting in Prairie City earlier this season.

The Mustangs made sure a lead on the road in the second game held up on Monday.

Van Dyke pitched into the seventh inning, the Mustangs cranked out seven hits and a two-run lead after three innings was enough during a 7-3 road triumph in HOIC play.

The Mustangs plated one run in the first and one in the third to grab an early advantage. They scored three in the fourth to go up 5-0 and Van Dyke did the rest on the mound.

Van Dyke earned the win after allowing three runs — two earned — on five hits. He struck out eight, walked four and hit three in 6 1/3 innings.

Van Dyke was chased after the final batter he faced took him to 114 pitches. Webb got the final two outs, one of which was by strikeout, and he allowed no runs and no hits.

Steenhoek and Wendt each had two hits apiece to lead the offense.

Steenhoek doubled and had two RBIs, Wendt tallied one run, one RBI and one walk and Van Dyke chipped in one hit and two RBIs.

Fenton collected one hit, one run and one hit by pitch, DeVries had one hit, two walks and two runs and Farver and Webb each walked twice. Farver, Owens and Carson Hansen each scored one run and Hobbs was hit by a pitch.

Greene County (5-12, 3-7) scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. The Rams had five hits and both teams committed three errors.

The win gives PCM the season series split. Greene County rallied from a three-run deficit earlier this season to win 14-3 in five innings. The Rams scored 13 of those 14 runs in the final two frames.
