OSKALOOSA — Newton’s boys tennis team is in the win column. The Cardinals cruised past host Oskaloosa on Tuesday during a Little Hawkeye Conference matchup.
Newton was 5-1 in singles and 5-0 in doubles during the 10-1 win. Nine of the 10 wins came in straight sets.
The Cardinals’ five singles wins came in the first five positions. Blake Baumgartner won 6-1, 6-0, Jonny Valtman claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory and Kael Swarts and Evan Marshall both won 6-2, 6-1 with the scores reversed in each set.
The lone three-set match for the night was won by Seth Adams. He registered a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 3 singles.
Baumgartner and Valtman won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, Swarts and Marshall teamed up to win 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and Adams and Ethan Valtman got a 6-2, 6-3 win a No. 3 doubles.
The final two Newton (1-6) wins came from Collin Buchli and Andrew Wiles at No. 4 doubles and David Holmes and Tyler Sterling at No. 5 doubles.
Buchli and Wiles won 6-1, 7-5 and Holmes and Sterling won 6-2, 6-3.
Pella 11, Newton 0
Class 1A No. 2 Pella won all 11 matches in straight sets and last year’s state runner-up downed Newton 11-0 on Monday at Aurora Heights Park.
Baumgartner played the closest singles match, losing 6-1, 6-4. Baumgartner and Jonny Valtman also lost 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
