Newton girls place fourth, boys fifth at Grinnell Tiger Relays

Shannon, Terpstra lead Cardinals with pair of wins

GRINNELL — Alyssa Shannon won two individual events, Addy Terpstra was part of two victories and Newton’s girls track and field team placed fourth in the five-team field at the Grinnell Tiger Coed Relays on Tuesday.

The Cardinal boys also were in town for the meet and placed fifth but did not have the services of most of their Drake Relays qualifiers.

Pella swept the team races. The Pella girls scored 122 points at the top and was followed by Oskaloosa (97), Williamsburg (78), Newton (64) and Grinnell (26).

The Pella boys won with 117 points. Dallas Center-Grimes was next with 106 followed by Williamsburg (78), Grinnell (64) and Newton (23).

Shannon and Terpstra both scored in double-figures to lead the Newton girls.

Shannon won the 3,000-meter run in a career-best 11 minutes, 1.94 seconds and ran to a win in the 800 in 2:28.96.

Terpstra won the 100 hurdles in 16.17 and the Cardinals’ other win came in the shuttle hurdle relay.

The team of Macy Lampe, JaQuay Priest, Chloe Rorabaugh and Terpstra won in 1:09.36. A second Cardinals’ squad of Alyssa Beerends, Emma Rogers, Annie Main and Gracie Clayton was third in 1:16.66.

Newton’s lone runner-up finish came from Bella Winther. She finished second in the 400 in 1:04.95 and Kate Muckler gave the Cardinals double points in fourth with a time of 1:06.93.

Terpstra, Rorabaugh, Beerends and Lampe all competed in the 100 hurdles. Rorabaugh was third in 17.37 seconds, while Beerends finished fourth in a season-best 18.03 and Lampe was sixth in 18.3.

Newton was third in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

In the 4x400 relay, the team of Winther, Taylor Schilling, Muckler and Shannon finished in a season-best 4:29.21.

The 4x800 relay team of Grace Benson, Winther, Hadley Kruse and Peyton Ray hit the finish line in 10:57.34.

The Newton boys were shut out of the win column, but the Cardinals were second in three events and third in three others.

Treycen Garton finished second in the 400 in a season-best 52.49 seconds, Brody Bauer placed second in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.94 and Dallas King was second in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 3 inches.

The two individual finishes that were third were Cole Swank (16.81) in the 110 high hurdles and Nate Davies (126-7) in the discus.

The Cardinals’ shuttle hurdle relay team was third with Reese Hammons, Curtis Payne, Bauer and Swank. They finished in a season-best 1:05.28.

Newton’s final top-six finish on the boys’ side came from Leo Friedman, who was sixth in the 3,200 in a career-best 11:21.19.

The Cardinal girls registered sixth other top-six finishes.

JaQuay Priest was fourth in the 200 in a season-best 28.61. Rogers also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 13-8 and Priest was sixth with a jump of 13-3.

Abby Bruce finished fifth in the 100 with a career-best time of 13.96, Tierney Adams took sixth in the shot put with a heave of 31-6 and Paige Benson was sixth in the discus with a toss of 82-5.
