Newton girls tennis falls to Indianola

Garrett sisters, Swarts highlight Cardinals in home loss to Indians

Maggie Garrett went 2-0 on the night and improved to 5-0 in singles play, but Newton’s girls tennis team fell short against Indianola during a Little Hawkeye Conference matchup at Aurora Heights Park on Tuesday.

The Cardinals went 2-4 in singles and 2-3 in doubles and lost to the Indians 7-4. Newton, which finished 3-0 in three-set matches, fell to 2-3 and 0-2 in LHC play.

Newton played the meet without No. 3 singles player Kya Butler, who was out with an illness.

The Garrett sisters played marathon singles matches. They were still on the court playing their first sets when other members of their team were finishing their entire matches.

Both Maggie Garrett and Lauryn Garrett lost first-set tiebreakers. Maggie Garrett rallied for a 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 10-3 victory at No. 2 singles, while Lauryn Garrett (2-3) lost her No. 1 singles match 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-0).

The other singles win came from Ella Swarts, who won 6-1, 2-6, 10-6 in the No. 4 position. Swarts improved to 3-2.

The Garrett sisters teamed up in doubles and got their first win of the season as a pair. They won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Swarts and Olivia Hotchkin registered the other doubles win. They lost the first set but recovered to win 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 2 doubles. They improved to 2-1 as a duo.
