Newton girls golf wins conference quadrangular

Cardinals take top three spots at Edmundson Golf Course

OSKALOOSA — Last Tuesday, Newton’s girls golf team opened Little Hawkeye Conference action with a 194 at Edmundson Golf Course.

One week later, the Cardinals played in another LHC meet at Edmundson and the scores improved enough to shave 12 shots off their team score.

The end result in both meets were wins over multiple conference schools. The latest victories came against Indianola, Grinnell and Oskaloosa.

Newton won the meet with a 182. Indianola (204) was 22 strokes back in second followed by Grinnell (232) and Oskaloosa (239).

“The girls played well on a very cold night,” Newton head girls golf coach Ashley Kahler said. “Our team score is right where we want it to be.”

Rylee Heryford won medalist honors with a 41. The Cardinals held down the first three positions as Marin Pettigrew was the runner-up medalist with a career-best 43 and Sophia Reynolds shot a career-best 46 in third. Pettigrew’s round included a pair of birdies.

Ella Price was the final counting scorer with a career-best 52. Addison Van Maanen made her varsity debut with a non-counting 63. Evie Main also shot a non-counting 63.

The Newton JV won its portion of the meet. The Cardinals shot a 240 and were 23 or more strokes in front of JV teams from Indianola (263), Oskaloosa (266) and Grinnell (296).

Addison Hook shot a career-best 52 and Kalleigh Berndt carded a 56 to lead the way.
