Newton’s Terpstra hits Blue Standard time in 100 hurdles

Cardinals compete on back-to-back nights

NORWALK — Addy Terpstra is headed to the Drake Relays after an impressive performance in the 100-meter hurdles on Monday.

Alyssa Shannon also won a pair of individual events for Newton’s girls track and field team and the Cardinals’ shuttle hurdle relay team moved into the top five in the state at the Norwalk Coed Invitational.

Newton registered three wins and 10 top-five finishes and placed sixth as a team with 71 points in its outdoor season opener.

Terpstra now ranks third in the state in the 100 hurdles after sprinting to a time of 15.23 seconds, which is good for a Blue Standard qualification into the Drake Relays.

She was .01 seconds ahead of South Tama County’s JoJo Tyynismaa, who also hit the Blue Standard time.

Terpstra anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a runner-up finish. The foursome of Macy Lampe, Emma Rogers, Chloe Rorabaugh and Terpstra finished in 1 minute, 9.25 seconds.

The top three finishers in the event are currently top seven overall in the state. Newton’s time of 1:09.25 was faster than its fastest time last season.

Shannon’s wins came in the 800 and 1,500. She won the 800 in 2:24.53, which ranks in the top 30 in the state. The winning 1,500 time was clocked in 5:06.25.

The Cardinals were fourth twice and fifth four times.

Marissa Cunningham placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 104 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

The 4x800 team of Grace Benson, Bella Winther, Kate Muckler and Morgan Stalzer finished fourth in 10:52.67.

Winther ran a 1:04.43 to place fifth in the 400 and Brooklyn Shannon was fifth in the 200 with a time of 28.49.

Newton took fifth in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The 4x100 team of Audrey Rausch, Briana Shannon, Rorabaugh and Terpstra finished in 53.92 and the 4x400 foursome of Winther, Alex Riney, Cassandra Adams and Muckler finished in 4:34.03.

Host Norwalk won the meet with 133.5 points, while Dallas Center-Grimes (132), Carlisle (117.5), North Polk (96.5) and Winterset (88) completed the top five. Newton (71), South Tama County (42), Grinnell (32) and Nevada (23.5) rounded out the nine-team field.

Cardinals finish sixth at Urbandale

URBANDALE — Newton’s girls track and field team competed on back-to-back days.

Terpstra qualified for the Drake Relays on Monday night and then went below 16 seconds in the 100 hurdles again at the Gary DouBrava Invitational on Tuesday.

Shannon won the 3,000 to lead the Cardinals to a sixth-place finish. The Cardinals scored 45 points and trailed fifth-place Ottumwa by eight points.

Dowling Catholic won the team title with 145 points. Indianola (123), Urbandale (110) and Iowa City West (91) completed the top five and Des Moines East (12) and Des Moines Lincoln (7) rounded out the eight-team field.

Shannon won the 3,000 in 11:42.5 and then placed second in the 800 in 2:29.59. Terpstra was the runner-up in the 100 hurdles. She registered a time of 15.81 seconds going into a strong headwind.

Terpstra anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to third. The foursome also included Lampe, Rogers and Rorabaugh and the group finished in 1:09.81.

The final top-three finish came in the 4x400 relay as Winther, Riney, Hadley Kruse and Taylor Schilling were third in 4:39.01.
