PCM’s Durant Van Dyke helped the Mustang boys basketball team reach a Class 2A district championship game this season.
Lynnville-Sully’s Conner Maston led the Hawks to the substate title game in 1A and Baxter’s Carson Scroggins guided the Bolts to their first conference championship since joining the Iowa Star Conference South Division five years ago.
All three area basketball players earned all-substate recognition for their efforts.

Van Dyke was part of the 2A Substate 7 squad and Scroggins and Maston each were members of the 1A Substate 6 team.
Van Dyke led the Mustangs to a 14-10 season. He averaged 18.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game. His 2.5 blocks per contest ranked sixth in 2A and he shot 64 percent from the floor, which ranked 12th in the class.
Joining Van Dyke on the 2A Substate 7 team were Des Moines Christian’s Adam Witty, Pella Christian’s Eric Mulder and Levi Schelhaas, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Ethan Davis, Pleasantville’s Mason Scheve, Albia’s Drew Chance and Davis County’s Dalton Reeves.
Witty and Mulder were the top two vote getters after each led their teams to a substate championship game against each other. Mulder and Schelhaas both played in the state tournament.
North Mahaska’s Nash Smith was the top vote getter in 1A Substate 6 after guiding the Warhawks to the state tournament.

Joining Scroggins, Maston and Smith on the 1A Substate 6 team were Mount Ayr’s Jaxien Frost, North Mahaska’s Lane Harmon, Martensdale-St. Marys’ Hogan Franey, Colo-NESCO’s Lucas Frohwein and Moravia’s Gage Hanes.
North Mahaska’s Seth Streebin was voted the 1A Substate 7 coach of the year.
Scroggins, who led the Bolts to an 18-5 season, averaged 16 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.3 blocks per game. The blocks per contest ranked 16th in 1A and Scroggins shot 46.8 percent from the floor.
Maston averaged 13.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He shot 47 percent from the floor, 42.3 percent from 3-point range and and 78.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Maston, who guided the Hawks to an 18-7 campaign, made 52 3-pointers.
