Cardinal bowlers cruise past Pella

Newton girls improve to 5-1 after easy win over Dutch

PELLA — Newton’s boys bowling team is starting to round into form as the season approaches the finish line. The Cardinal girls remain the top team in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

On Saturday, both teams cruised past Pella at the Dutch 200 Bowling Center.

The Newton girls turned in a season-best team score against Pella, winning 2,433-1,829. The Cardinals led 1,654-1,255 after the first round.

The boys squad wasn’t at its best but came pretty close during a 2,543-2,263 victory.

The Cardinal girls (5-1) got a career-best day from Beka Weithers. She led Newton to the victory with career-best single game of 205 and a career-best series of 387. Her other single game was 182, which also would have been a career-best score.

The Cardinals grabbed the top five scores of the day as Libbie Keith (351) was second, Bailey Hansen (322) finished third and Genessa Slings and Kaitlyn Gifford tied for fourth with a 297.

Keith rolled individual scores of 149 and 202. Hansen rolled a consistent 163 and 159, Slings had a 161 and 136 and Gifford rolled a 134 and a 163.

The other girls varsity score came from Navaeh Brown, who made her varsity debut with a 268 series. She had individual games of 113 and 155.

Bri Crummett led Pella (2-4) but placed sixth overall with a 283 series.

Travis Wane had the top male varsity score on the day as he registered a 394 with individual games of 202 and 192 for Pella (2-4).

Logan Bown led Newton (3-3) and was second overall with a 355 series. He had individual games of 145 and 210.

Sebastian King had a 152 and a season-best 198 for a 350 series. King placed third and David Holmes was fourth with a 342 series. Holmes’ two individual games were a 149 and 193.

Austin Kennedy made his varsity debut and finished fifth overall with 341. His individual games were 169 and 172.

Dallas King and Owen Guldberg were the other varsity bowlers. Dallas King finished with single games of 146 and 174 for a 320 series. Guldberg rolled single games of 148 and 145 for a 293 series. Dallas King tied for sixth overall and Guldberg was eighth.

The Newton girls had a 779-574 advantage in the Baker games, while the boys won that part of the competition 835-715.

Nathan Hauber led the Newton boys JV2 team with a 318 series and Evan Benac was the top JV1 bowler with a 317 series. The top Newton girl on the JV-1 team was Olivia Pickerell, who rolled a 218 series.
