Ingle’s career-high lifts Newton boys past Nevada

Cards rout Cubs in big non-conference win

A career night from Jake Ingle and an offensive explosion pushed Newton’s boys basketball team to a dominant home win over Class 3A Nevada on Thursday night.

The Cardinals led by two after one but dominated the final three quarters during a 75-48 non-conference victory.

Ingle made 7-of-9 from 3-point range and put in a career-best 31 points. He also had two rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The seven made 3-pointers also is a career high and it ties three other players for the most treys in one game in school history.

“He got off hot early and his teammates kept going to him,” Newton boys basketball coach Jason Carter said. “He got some open looks out of a few sets that we ran for him, too.”

Adam Mattes made seven 3-pointers against Nevada last year and Connor Gholson hit seven twice in a game back in 2017. The other former Cardinal to make seven was Tyler Wood back in 2013.

Newton (6-4) led 17-15 after the first period but extended the lead to double-digits by halftime. The Cardinals won the third 16-13 and outscored the Cubs 20-7 in the fourth.

The Cardinals shot 51.7 percent from the floor, made 12-of-20 from 3-point range and turned the ball over just 11 times.

“We had a conversation with the guys about taking the right kind of 3-pointers,” Carter said. “I think we can take less 3s but make more. We are really good on kick out 3s. Those are the kind of 3s we want to take.”

Nevada (8-3) made more free throws (14) than Newton attempted (7) but turned the ball over 21 times. The Cubs shot 37.5 percent from the floor and connected on 4-of-14 from 3-point range.

“A couple of our runs were helped by their turnovers,” Carter said. “Our defense got us going. We can’t ever turn the defense off.”

Brody Bauer scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists and Adam Mattes registered nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Bauer was 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

Tade Vanderlaan matched his career-high with eight points and added a pair of assists. He was 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Cole Plowman registered three rebounds, two assists and two blocks and Kacey Sommars grabbed two boards, dished out four assists and swiped two steals.

Off the bench, Ian Reynolds had four points and two rebounds, Caleb Mattes chipped in three points and two boards and Kael Swarts pulled down two rebounds.

Carson Rhodes led the Cubs with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cardinals lost to Nevada 58-52 last year and the Cubs came into Thursday’s game with eight wins.

“We felt like we were the better team coming into the game,” Carter said. “We just needed to play to our ability. It should give us a ton of confidence. They are a good team. We wanted to make a statement, and we did.”

Note: Newton’s Little Hawkeye Conference game against Class 3A No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes scheduled for 7:45 p.m. on Friday was postponed due to the winter snowstorm. The game will now be played at 7:45 p.m. on Monday in Newton.
