Cardinal wrestling places ninth at Ottumwa Invitational

Cardinals compete in Ogden girls tournament

OTTUMWA — A pair of seniors won individual titles for Newton’s wrestling team at the Ottumwa Invitational on Saturday.

And Colin Sharp downed a ranked wrestler on his way to a 4-0 day.

Joining Sharp at the top of the podium in his weight class was Brennan Amos. Sharp won the 160-pound title and Amos was the champion at 152.

The Cardinals brought seven wrestlers in all and finished ninth in the 15-team field with 93 points. They were four points back of eighth, but Moravia brought 15 wrestlers.

Amos and Sharp both finished 4-0 for the day.

Amos won 16-0 and 15-3 in pool-play matches and won by fall and claimed a 14-7 win in bracket action.

Sharp opened pool play with a win by pin and the rest of his wins were 7-3, 7-2 and 10-2.

The next best finisher was Wyatt Weter, who was second at 182. He was 3-1 on the day, winning 10-0 and 6-0 in pool play and claiming a win by pin in bracket matches.

Dayton Petithory finished 2-1 and was fifth at 113. He lost in pool play but won by fall and claimed a 12-11 victory in the bracket matches.

Seth Adams (120) finished ninth, Nathan Milburn (170) was 10th and Conner McPartlin (138) took 12th in their weight classes. Adam won twice by fall during his tournament.

Host Ottumwa won the tournament with 191.5 points. Albia (184) took second, Sigourney-Keota (180.5) was third, Kirksville, Mo. (172) came in fourth and Iowa City Liberty (155) completed the top five. Every team in the top eight entered at least 10 wrestlers.

Three Cardinals finish second at Ogden girls tournament

OGDEN — Seven Newton wrestlers competed in an all-girls tournament at Ogden on Saturday. Abby Chance, Ella Machin and Jessie Hutchinson all finished second in their brackets to lead the Cardinals.

Chance and Machin both were 2-1 on the day. Machin record two pins, Chance won once by pin and recorded a 9-3 decision and Hutchinson’s lone win came by pin. She was 1-1 for the day.

Emma Lopez-Garcia was 1-2 for the day and her lone win was a 9-7 decision. She finished third in her bracket. Stella Cupples, Claire Breuer and Brianna Aebischer also competed and all placed fourth.
