Tigerhawks win five titles at home girls wrestling tournament

Newton’s Cupples wins individual title for Cardinals

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo entered 12 wrestlers into the Tigerhawks’ home girls tournament on Friday night. And if the tournament kept a team score, the Tigerhawks would have been firmly in the conversation for a team championship.

And Newton’s seven wrestlers had a strong showing, too.

At the end of the day, Colfax-Mingo’s 12 wrestlers compiled five individual titles, six runner-up finishes and a third-place medal.

Newton brought home one individual title and four others were second in their weight classes.

The tournament featured brackets that were set up to give each grappler as many matches as possible. There were multiple brackets for some weight classes.

The featured Jasper County matchup came at 170 pounds where Newton’s Jessie Hutchinson battled Colfax-Mingo’s Katie Schlosser. The two wrestlers met a few times last year at 195 and Hutchinson’s win over Schlosser at last year’s girls state tournament propelled her to a state medal and sent Schlosser home without one.

This time around, Schlosser got a bit of redemption. She scored a win by fall in 1 minute, 4 seconds. It was the first match of the day for both wrestlers.

Schlosser won her second match by fall in 19 seconds to claim the tournament title. Hutchinson was the runner-up at 170 after winning her second match by pin in 26 seconds.

The other individual champions for Colfax-Mingo were Danica Linn (120), Mariah Webster (126), Kylie Doty (132) and Emma Cook (220).

Newton’s Stella Cupples (113) also won an individual title for the Cardinals.

Cupples had no trouble in her two matches in the 113-C bracket. She won both bouts by fall in 11 and 16 seconds, respectively.

Linn was 3-0 with three pins in her 120-A bracket. She won her first match in 58 seconds and ended the tournament with a bang, pinning Leah Chandler of Chariton to win the championship.

Chandler, who was leading at the time of the pin, defeated Linn at the girls state wrestling tournament last year and finished third at 113.

Webster also was 3-0 in her 126-B bracket. She won all three matches by fall, including a 21-second pin in her final match.

In the 132-A bracket, Doty was 2-0. She won her first match 8-2 and then registered a 14-1 major decision in her final bout.

Cook was 2-0 at 220. She opened with a 3-0 win and then finished off her gold-medal performance with a win by fall in 1:02.

Colfax-Mingo’s Lily Webster (106), Shyann Steck (132), Kirsten Frier (138), Melany Vry (145), Maggie Schroeder (160) and Lily Arndt (195) all finished second in their brackets.

The Cardinals’ runner-up finishers were Emma Lopez-Garcia (138), Brianna Aebischer (152) and Ella Machin (182).

Lily Webster and Riely Wright both wrestled at 106. Lily Webster was 1-1 with a win by fall in the 106-A bracket and Wright finished third in the 106-B bracket.

Steck was 1-1 with an 18-second pin in her 132-B bracket. Schroeder also finished 1-1 with a win by pin at 160.

Schroeder’s only loss came to Southeast Polk’s Bella Porcelli, who was third at the state meet last year. Schroeder went the distance with Porcelli and grabbed an early lead in the match when she put the Ram grappler on her back but ultimately lost 12-4.

Frier also had a tough matchup in one of her three matches in the 138-A bracket. She won her first two matches by fall but settled for second after losing to Boone’s Anna Sondall, who was eighth at 126 at the state meet last year.

Like Schroeder, Frier battled Sondall tough and had a lead but couldn’t finish it off.

Vry opened her day with a tough matchup against Iowa Valley’s Emma Peach, who is a freshman expected to compete for a top-five finish at this year’s state meet.

Vry was 2-1 on the day with a 9-2 win and a win by fall. Peach defeated Vry by pin in their opening match in the 145-C bracket.

Arndt was 1-2 for her day at 195. She won once by fall and lost twice by fall.

Aebischer was 2-1 in the 152 bracket. She won her second match 12-5 and ended her day with a win by pin.

Lopez-Garcia and Machin both were 1-1 in their brackets.

Lopez-Garcia lost 4-3 in her opening match but got an 18-second pin later to secure the silver medal.

Machin recovered from her first-match loss to win 12-4 in her final bout at 182.

Newton’s other two wrestlers were Claire Brewer and Anastacia Franco. Brewer was third in the 138-C bracket after ending her day with a win by pin. Franco was fourth in the 113-B bracket.
