Newton boys down Oskaloosa, Cards split with Indians

Cardinal boys improve to 3-1 on the season

Cole Plowman registered a double-double, Newton held Oskaloosa to single digits in all four quarters and the Cardinals boys basketball team downed the Indians 53-31 at home.

Newton improved to 2-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference despite making just 3-of-20 from long range. The Cardinals led 24-16 at halftime.

Plowman finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Jake Ingle put in 11 points.

Adam Mattes and Caleb Mattes matched each other stat for stat. Adam Mattes started and Caleb Mattes came off the bench but both finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Brody Bauer had four points, three rebounds and three assists and Tade Vanderlaan chipped in three points and two assists. Kael Swarts and Ian Reynolds grabbed two rebounds each.

The Cardinals (3-1 overall, 2-0 in the LHC) shot 42.3 percent from the floor and hit 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. They committed just 12 turnovers.

The Indians (0-3, 0-2) scored seven points in the first and third quarters, had a nine-point second frame and scored eight in the fourth.

GIRLS

Oskaloosa 59, Newton 34

The Cardinals played with the Indians for a half but couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers and a 6-of-18 night at the foul line during a 59-34 loss in LHC play.

Newton trailed by two at halftime and it was a three-point game with 5 minutes to play in the third, but the Cardinals didn’t score the rest of the quarter and didn’t recover.

“We did a good job on their two best players in the first half,” Newton girls basketball coach Eric Vander Velden said. “But they had another girl step up. Their best player scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half.”

Oskaloosa (4-1, 1-0) outscored Newton 17-5 in the third and 21-10 in the fourth.

Rori Nehring scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots for Newton, which fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Audrey Rausch added five points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals and Sophia Reynolds chipped in four points, six rebounds and three assists.

Kealey Manning registered five points and five rebounds and Marissa Cunningham tallied four points and two boards off the bench.

Emma Rogers finished with three points, four rebounds and three steals and Kya Butler grabbed four boards and delivered three assists.

Newton made 26 percent from the floor and hit 2-of-14 from 3-point range.
