Mustangs win twice at North Mahaska tournament

PCM volleyball defeats host Warhawks, Pleasantville in New Sharon

NEW SHARON — PCM’s volleyball team won twice at the North Mahaska tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs split two matches with the host Warhawks and also downed Pleasantville but went 2-4 on the day.

PCM needed just two sets to dispatch North Mahaska 21-14, 21-14, but the Warhawks also defeated the Mustangs 15-21, 21-13, 15-11.

The Mustangs downed Pleasantville 16-21, 21-8, 15-9 but lost to two other South Iowa Cedar League teams and were swept by Grinnell.

Grinnell downed the Mustangs 21-19, 21-15. Sigourney and HLV both took care of PCM in three sets. The Savages won 10-21, 21-16, 15-8 and the Warriors claimed a 25-23, 19-21, 17-15 win over the Mustangs.

In the win over North Mahaska (11-10), Sidney Shaver had 14 assists, Emily Foster tallied a career-high seven kills and two blocks, Chelsea Bird had five kills and two digs and Joslin Briles put down three kills and served up three aces.

RaeAnn Duinink tallied six digs, Skylar Burns had two digs and Claire Wilson was 12-of-12 in serves with three aces. The Mustangs (8-15) were 35-of-39 in serves as a team.

Shaver had 10 assists, served four aces and was 10-of-10 in serves in the win over Pleasantville (9-6). Bird tallied six kills and three digs, Reese Palm had four kills and Foster tallied two kills and two blocks.

Duinink chipped in seven digs, Wilson tallied four digs and Addyson Hegwood collected two digs. The Mustangs served 41-of-48 as a team.

In the three-set loss to North Mahaska, Shaver dished out 12 assists, Bird had six kills and four digs and Briles put down six kills on 14 attempts and had a kill efficiency of .357.

Wilson had three kills and four digs, Foster put down four kills and Palm had three kills. Duinink tallied five digs, Addison Steenhoek dished out four assists and Hegwood tallied two digs.

The Mustangs served 32-of-38 with Shaver serving 13-of-13 and Wilson going 6-of-6.

In the tough, narrow loss to HLV (7-9), Shaver had 15 assists and five aces, Bird put down eight kills and had eight digs and Briles collected five kills.

Wilson finished with three kills and four digs, Foster had two kills, two assists and two blocks and Duinink added five digs and five aces. Palm put down two kills.

The Mustangs were 49-of-54 in serves. Burns served 8-of-8, Shaver connected on 14 of her 15 serves and Duinink was 13-of-14.

Shaver had 10 assists and two aces, Bird finished with five kills, five digs and two assists and Wilson tallied two kills, three digs and two aces in the win over Sigourney (11-7).

Foster had three kills, Briles put down two kills and Duinink tallied nine digs.

The Mustangs were 37-of-43 in serves with Shaver and Wilson serving 9-of-10 and Duinink going 8-of-9.

The only team to sweep PCM on the day was Grinnell (14-5). In that loss, Wilson finished with two kills, seven digs and two aces.

Shaver added seven assists and two digs, Bird tallied two kills and five digs and Briles put down four kills.

Duinink tallied 10 digs and Palm had two kills. The Mustangs were 26-of-29 in serves with Duinink and Shaver both serving 6-of-7 and Wilson going 5-of-6.

Grinnell went 5-1 on the day and lost in the championship match to New London.
