Bats wake up in PCM baseball’s win over Nevada

NEVADA — PCM baseball coach Jeff Lindsay knew his team could get to another level offensively.

If the level can go any further than what it did on Monday night against Nevada, the Mustangs will be in good shape the rest of the summer.

PCM fell behind early but plated 10 runs in the second inning and added seven in the third during a 19-4, five-inning win over the host Cubs during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

“Our offense has been good lately,” Lindsay said. “Everyone is seeing it and is locked in. I think we are hopefully hitting the level I thought we could reach. Consistency will show us if that is the case.”

The Mustangs (5-5 overall, 5-1 in conference play) recorded 15 hits and took advantage of three errors by Nevada (2-10, 1-5).

The win keeps PCM in the mix for the conference title. West Marshall is currently 6-1 and Roland-Story has two losses in league play.

“We felt like if we played to our potential, we’d have a chance to be in the mix,” Lindsay said. “We are not talking about it right now though. We are just working hard and having fun.”

Andrew Mitchell pitched all five innings and got the win. He allowed all four earned runs in the first two innings, surrendered seven hits and finished with five strikeouts and one walk.

Offensively, Mitchell added one hit, two runs, one RBI and he was hit by a pitch.

“Andrew did a nice job,” Lindsay said. “He ironed things out after the second inning. The breaking ball also showed up tonight. He used it effectively and with confidence.”

PCM has won two straight games and outscored its opponents 27-7 in those contests.

Four Mustangs had multiple hits, six players scored multiple runs and PCM was hit by five pitches against Nevada.

Sage Burns finished with three hits, two runs and five RBIs and Caleb Duinink added three hits, one walk, one hit by pitch, two runs and one RBI. Both Burns and Duinink doubled once.

Durant Van Dyke tallied two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Cade Lindsay had two hits, three runs, one walk and one RBI and Connor Bennett scored two runs, was hit by two pitches, stole one base and walked once.

Beau Webb had one hit, one walk, one RBI and two runs, Easton Webb added one hit, one walk and one run and Gavin Fenton walked once and scored one run.

Lindsay managed to get several bench players at-bats in the game. Logan Stallings had one hit and one run, Zeb Padget walked once and scored a run, Will Owens had one hit and Jacob Wendt was hit by a pitch.
