Five Cardinals earn all-LHC girls soccer recognition

Audrey Rausch and Brynn Cazett were one of the best offensive tandems in the Little Hawkeye Conference in 2021.

The Cardinal duo accounted for 11 goals and seven assists in conference play this past spring and both Rausch and Cazett earned first-team all-conference honors for their efforts.

Five Newton players were part of the all-LHC girls soccer team, which were released recently after the girls state tournament.

Earning second-team recognition was sophomore Emma Lopez-Garcia. The two honorable mention picks were senior Nykole Hernandez and junior Aurora Nehring.

Rausch was a first-team all-conference forward and ranked first in the LHC with six assists in conference play. She was sixth with seven goals and fifth in total points with 20.

The Cardinal sophomore also was part of the 2A Central All-District second team. On the season, Rausch scored 22 goals, dished out eight assists and tallied 52 points.

Cazett was a first-team all-conference midfielder after scoring four goals during conference play. The junior delivered one assist and scored nine points.

Lopez-Garcia was moved around the field this season to take advantage of her speed. She earned second team all-conference honors as a midfielder and had one goal, one assist and three points.

As an honorable mention selection, Hernandez was one of the team’s best defenders but also scored one goal in conference play.

Nehring was one of the top keepers in the LHC, according to the numbers. She ranked third in total saves inside conference play with 72, allowed the third fewest goals at 17 and ranked fifth in save percentage at 81.

The 2A Central all-district first team included Pella’s Abby Warner and Macy Schultz, Norwalk’s Hanna Kehoe, JoJo Bice, Reagan Holtorf, Reagan Teut and goalkeeper Kennedy Burch, DCG’s Avery Korsching, Emma Angus and Kylie Knief, Marion’s Grace Coates and Clear Creek-Amana’s Ellen Austin and Payton Graft.
