Newton baseball can’t overcome miscues in loss to B-F

Newton’s baseball team managed just four hits over seven innings, committed two errors in the field and couldn’t overcome several base running mistakes during a 4-2 home loss to Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday.

The Cardinals trailed 4-0 after three innings. The Bluejays won the non-conference game despite committing four errors.

“We just didn’t have the vibe tonight,” Newton baseball coach Brad Kahler said. “There were a lot of base running mistakes. We are not a good enough team to make those errors. But we were still right there.”

Bondurant-Farrar (1-3) scored two in the second and two in the third to take the lead for good. Newton (3-2) plated its two runs in the fifth.

The Cardinals had four hits and drew seven walks. Kael Swarts, Kacey Sommars, Braydon Chance and Turner Williams each had one hit. Swarts tallied an RBI and Chance walked once.

Brody Bauer had one walk and stole two bases, Drew Thompson drew two walks and scored a run, Tade Vanderlaan had one walk and one run and Evan Grimm and Eli Stewart each finished with one walk.

Chance took the loss on the mound after starting and allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters in 4 1/3 innings.

Williams pitched for the first time since having Tommy John surgery and he allowed no runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

Bondurant-Farrar’s four runs came from players who reached base on a walk, hit by pitch, error and a fielder’s choice.

Newton put two runners on base with no outs in the seventh but failed to score after hitting into a double play.

Alex Hall went 4-for-4 at the top of B-F’s lineup.
