Newton girls finish fourth, PCM fifth at Pella Dutch coed

Shannon, Terpstra lead Cardinals in Pella

PELLA — The track and field teams from both Newton and PCM got tune-ups for this week’s state qualifying meet on Monday when the Cardinals and Mustangs competed in the Pella Dutch Coed Invitational.

Newton claimed three wins and five top-three finishes and finished fourth in the team standings with 87 points. Four of PCM’s six top-three finishes were bronze-medal performances and the Mustangs (78) finished nine points back of Newton in fifth.

Host Pella won the team championship with 168 points followed by Oskaloosa (143) and Grinnell (103). Pella Christian (56), Knoxville (41), Pella JV (27) and Colfax-Mingo (5) rounded out the nine-team field.

Addy Terpstra and Alyssa Shannon were responsible for two of Newton’s wins.

Terpstra won the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 16.37 seconds and Shannon grabbed the gold medal in the 1,500 as she won the race with a season-best time of 5 minutes, 16.62 seconds.

The other win for Newton came in the 4x400 relay. The foursome of Gracie Clayton, Chassidy Henwood, Ashay Malow and Desirae Gifford won with a time of 4:38.33.

The Cardinals’ lone runner-up finish was in the shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Alyssa Beerends, JaQuay Priest, Chloe Rorabaugh and Terpstra finished in a time of 1:13.97.

The 4x800 relay was third. The group of Grace Benson, Gifford, Morgan Stalzer and Willow Oswalt completed the race in 11:33.77.

The 4x100 relay team of Priest, Terpstra, Libby Shores and Rorabaugh finished fourth in 53.29.

Casse Adams was fourth in the 400 hurdles in a season-best time of 1:25.38. Amor Hilburn was fifth in the 3,000 in a season-best 16:20.26.

The Cardinals were sixth in three individual events. Shores was sixth in the 100 in a season-best time of 14.39 seconds and she also took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 6 3/4 inches. Rorabaugh ended up sixth in the high jump with a season-best leap of 4-6.

PCM’s lone win came in the 4x200 relay. The team of Margo Chipps, Delaney Baird, Ryan Bennett and Chelsea Bird finished in a season-best 1:51.61. That same team also was third in the 4x100 relay with a season-best time of 52.71 seconds.

Belle Hudnut got PCM’s lone runner-up finish. She was second in the 100 hurdles in a season-best time of 17.15.

Paige Steenhoek and Tiffani Koonce both ran season-best times in the 1,500. Steenhoek was third in 5:27.96 and Koonce took fourth in 5:31.45.

The other three top-five individual performances came from Celeste Wagaman, Sophia Steenhoek and Brionna Kalar. Wagaman (4-8) was fourth in the high jump, Sophia Steenhoek took fourth in the 400 with a season-best time of 1:06.8 and Kalar finished fifth in the 100 in a season-best 14.21.

The shuttle hurdle and distance medley relay teams both were third.

In the shuttle hurdle, Skylar Burns, Avery Houser, Eliana Buswell and Kate McClellan finished in 1:14.74 and the distance medley relay team of Hayleigh Spray, Reese Palm, Lilli Baird and Jillian Fairbanks completed the race in 5:01.12.

The sprint medley relay team of Spray, Kalar, Lilli Baird and Riley DeVore was fourth in 2:04 and the 4x400 relay team of Alissa Ives, Lily Bowen, Fairbanks and Elle Davis finished in 4:56.6.

Colfax-Mingo brought Kyra Lester over to compete in the discus. She finished fourth with one of the best throws of her career. Her best toss was marked at 115-0.
