Garton, Urias lead Newton boys to sixth at Pella coed

PCM’s 4x100 relay team leads Mustangs to seventh

PELLA — Treycen Garton and Gavin Urias led Newton’s boys track and field team at the Pella Dutch Coed Invitational on Monday.

The Cardinals and PCM Mustangs were shut out of the win column but Garton and Urias both claimed runner-up finishes to help Newton to 58 points in sixth.

PCM (52) was second in one relay and finished six points back of the Cardinals in seventh.

Host Pella won the meet with 175 points followed by Norwalk (158), Grinnell (92.5), Pella Christian (86) and Oskaloosa (58.5) in the top five. The rest of the nine-team field included Knoxville (44) and the Pella JV (5).

Garton’s second-place finish came in the 400-meter dash as he was clocked in a 52.36 seconds. Cody Klein was fourth in the event in a season-best 53.37.

The Cardinals doubled up in the 400 hurdles, too. Urias was second with a season-best time of 58.71 and Brody Bauer took third in a season-best 59.16.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Bauer, Cole Swank, Urias and Reese Hammons ran one of their best times of the season and finished third in 1:06.46.

Swank also was fifth in the 110 high hurdles in 16.81 and Brennan Amos ran a season-best time of 2:06.82 to finish fifth in the 800.

PCM’s only top-five finish in an individual event came in the 100 where Kaden Hale was fifth in a season-best time of 11.82.

The Mustangs piled up points in relays as they were top four in five of them.

The 4x100 relay team of Andrew Mitchell, Aidan Anderson, Jacob Van Winkle and Justin Maggard were second in a season-best time of 44.8.

The 4x200 relay team also ran a season-best time. The foursome of Mitchell, Maggard, Landon Fenton and Van Winkle were third in 1:34.52.

The 4x400 relay team also finished third. The team of Carson Duinink, Gavin Fenton, Carter Burns and Mickey Mackewich completed the race in 3:46.95.

The shuttle hurdle and distance medley relay teams both were fourth.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Gatlin Boell, Gavin Fenton, Trey Broderson and Maggard finished in 1:06.47. The distance medley relay team of Boell, Burns, Beau Webb and Duinink completed the race in 4:02.06.
