Depth helps Cardinal boys cruise to win on Senior Night

Lynnville-Sully finishes second, Colfax-Mingo fourth at annual Cardinal Relays

Jackson Mace-Maynard won three individual events, Nate Maki sprinted to a pair of wins and Gavin Urias had the most productive night of his career during the annual Cardinal Relays at H.A. Lynn Stadium on Thursday.

Eight Cardinals scored double-figure points on Senior Night as Newton cruised to the team championship.

The Cardinals scored 207 points at the top, while Lynnville-Sully (128) was the runner-up. The Hawks edged Pleasantville (124) by four points and Colfax-Mingo (83) finished fourth in the seven-team field. The rest of the lineup included North Mahaska (77), Southeast Warren (69) and Twin Cedars (8).

Mace-Maynard scored 30 team points after winning the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. Maki scored 25 points after claiming wins in the 100 and 200 and Urias’ 26.5-point night included a win in the 400 hurdles.

Lynnville-Sully won three events and tallied six runner-up finishes. Conner Maston led the Hawks with 21.5 points after winning the high jump and finishing second in the 200.

Carter Dunsbergen scored 20 points, winning the 110 high hurdles and finishing second to Maston in the high jump.

A.J. Gibson led Colfax-Mingo with 10.5 points. He was third in the 400.

Newton won 12 of the 19 events, tallied 23 top-three finishes and doubled up in 10 individual events.

Mace-Maynard won the 800 in 2 minute, 6.63 seconds. He took first in the 1,600 in 4:40.97 and ran a season-best time of 9:48.65 to win the 3,200.

Maki won the 100 in 11.53 seconds and sprinted to a win in the 200 in 22.96. The other wins on the track came from Urias in the 400 hurdles and Derek Beiner in the 400. Urias won the 400 hurdles in a season-best 59.51 and was second to Beiner in the 400 in a season-best 55.69.

Beiner’s winning time in the 400 was clocked at a season-best 53.37. Jaden Dydell was fourth in the 400 in 59.79 but a team can only score team points from the top two finishers.

Nate Davies scored a win in the discus with a throw of 123 feet and the Cardinals were victorious in the 4x400, shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

The sprint medley relay team of Zane Biondi, Collin Sharp, Cody Klein and Treycen Garton won the race in 1:39.09.

Maki, Sharp, Klein and Garton won the distance medley relay in 3:45.2 and Beiner, Jared Smith, Klein and Garton were winners in the 4x400 relay in 3:35.84.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Urias, Bauer, Reese Hammons and Curtis Payne finished first in a season-best time of 1:06.11.

Newton was 1-4 in the 100 as Biondi finished fourth in 12.1. Klein gave the Cardinals double points in the 200 as he was third in a season-best 24.27.

Smith was third in the 800 in a season-best time of 2:15.83. Brennan Amos ran season-best times in the 1,600 (5:02.82) and 3,200 (10:58.06) to finish second and fourth, respectively. Also finishing in the top six in the two mile was Brenden Holschuh, who finished sixth in a season-best time of 11:47.68.

In the 110 high hurdles, the Cardinals went 2-3-4 with Hammons (16.85), Cole Swank (16.95) and Payne (17.21). Hammons ran a season-best time.

Newton scored double points in the 400 hurdles as Bauer (1:00.56) was third. Garton couldn’t score team points but finished sixth in 1:03.35.

The Cardinals added double points in the long jump and shot put. Urias was third in the long jump with a season-best leap of 18-7 and Payne finished sixth in a season-best jump of 17-9.

Dallas King had his best throw of the season in the shot put as he was second with a toss of 43-7 1/2. Tyson Elliott finished sixth with a toss of 36-7.

The Hawks scored most of their team points in relays. But Maston was second in the 200 with a season-best time of 24.2 and Mason Jansen was fifth in a season-best 25.74.

Dunsbergen won the 110 high hurdles in 16.03 and Blake Rea finished fifth in 17.37.

Maston and Dunsbergen were 1-2 in the high jump with season-best leaps of 5-10 and 5-8, respectively.

The Hawks won three events in all. The final win came in the 4x200 relay as the team of Kyle Squires, Ryan Annee, Josh Hardenbrook and Corder Noun Harder won in 1:37.83.

L-S was the runner-up in the 4x800, shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

In the 4x800 relay, Isaac Johnson, Zach Morningstar, Blake Van Wyk and Kale Ehresman finished in 9:37.4.

The shuttle hurdle team of Rea, James Gruver, Jansen and Dunsbergen were second in 1:08.07.

Squires, Noun Harder, Hardenbrook and Gruver ran 1:42.03 in the sprint medley relay and Noun Harder, Hardenbrook, Caleb Rea and Maston finished the distance medley relay in 3:59.4.

The 4x100 relay team of Squires, Annee, Hardenbrook and Noun Harder were third in 47.21 and the 4x400 relay team of Caleb Rea, Maston, Blake Rea and Noun Harder were third in 3:48.43.

The Hawks were 5-6 in the 800 as Morningstar was fifth in a season-best 2:22.68 and Johnson (2:24.8) finished sixth. Morningstar (5:20.98) also placed sixth in the 1,600.

Gruver took fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.28. Annee placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 18-3 1/2.

Colfax-Mingo’s top finish came from Justin Myers in the 400 hurdles. He finished second in 59.94. Gibson took third in the 400 (57.41) and was sixth in the 200 (25.96).

The Tigerhawks were top-five in three field events. Grant Alexander (112-7) was fourth in the discus, Tanner Gorman finished fourth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 18-5 and Andrew Gorman took fifth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 37-0 1/2.

The other top individual finishes came from Seth Johnson in the 100 and Josh Kite in the 110 high hurdles. Johnson finished fifth in 12.16 and Kite took sixth in 18.41.

Colfax-Mingo was third in the 4x800, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

In the 4x800, C-M finished in 9:50.14 with Jared Lewis, Elias Hostetter, Merritt McConeghey and Coleman Craig.

Trey Hockemeier, Myers, Noah Strohmeyer and Gibson were third in the sprint medley in 1:45.87 and the distance medley relay team of Colton Lind, Cole Bracewell, Tanner Gorman and Lewis were third in 4:21.55.
