Newton girls cruise to team title at Cardinal Relays

Colfax-Mingo, Lynnville-Sully finish 2-3 at Newton’s annual track meet

Newton’s girls track and field team put on a show in front of its home fans on Thursday at the annual Cardinal Relays.

The Cardinals won 12 of 19 events, doubled up in seven individual events and claimed five relay wins during a dominating performance. Newton won the team championship at its second and final home meet of the year, scoring 206 points at the top.

Colfax-Mingo was the runner-up with 137.33 points and the rest of the seven-team field included Lynnville-Sully (115.66), Pleasantville (92), North Mahaska (75), Twin Cedars (40) and Southeast Warren (22).

The Cardinals won 12 events but also were second four times and finished third in three other events.

Newton was particularly dominant on the track, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and running to wins in the 800, 1,500, 3,000 and the 100 and 400 hurdles.

Alyssa Shannon led the way for Newton, scoring 22.5 points. She won the 400 in 1 minute, 5.1 seconds and ran to a win in the 800 in 2:29.98.

Willow Oswalt scored 18 points, winning the 3,000 in 13:18.42 and finishing second in the 1,500 in 6:05.08.

JaQuay Priest and Addy Terpstra both scored 17.5 points. Priest won the 200 in 28.14, Terpstra was the winner in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.49 and they combined to help win the shuttle hurdle relay in a season-best time of 1:11.55. That team also included Alyssa Beerends and Chloe Rorabaugh.

The other top point scorers for the Cardinals included Kynnedei Terpstra, Gracie Clayton and Chassidy Henwood.

Kynnedei Terpstra scored 15 points on the night and won the 100 in a season-best 13.69. Clayton also tallied 15 points, led by her win in the 400 hurdles. She finished in a season-best 1:15.01.

Henwood scored 11 points in the meet, finishing third in the 200 in a season-best 29.04.

Colfax-Mingo was led by Carley Underwood’s 20 points but Kyra Lester also scored 15, McKayla Smith added 12 and McKenna Pleima (11.5) and Kylie Doty (10) also reached double figures.

Underwood’s day included a win in the long jump with a season-best leap of 15 feet, 6 1/2 inches. She also was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.13.

Lester won the discus with a toss of 111-0 and finished fourth in the shot put (32-0) and Smith was third in both the shot put (32-5 1/2) and discus (season-best 97-1).

Lynnville-Sully, which did not have the services of standout distance runner Greenlee Smock, was led by Caitlin Alberts’ 12.5 points and Megan Van Zante (12), Sydney Jansen (11.33), Korinne Jansen (11) and Kinsley Tice (10) also scored in double figures.

The Hawks were led by Van Zante’s win in the 1,500. She finished in 5:58.69. Alberts also was second in the 800 with a time of 2:39.07.

L-S won the 4x200 and distance medley relays with season-best times.

The Cardinals won the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800 and sprint medley relays, setting new season-best times in two of those events.

In the 4x100, Priest, Addy Terpstra, Henwood and Kynnedei Terpstra won in 53.3.

The 4x400 relay team of Taylor Schilling, Kate Muckler, Shannon and Ashay Malow won in a season-best 4:28.97.

The sprint medley relay team of Priest, Kynnedei Terpstra, Addy Terpstra and Henwood won the race in a season-best time of 1:57.3.

The Cardinals won the 4x800 with Muckler, Grace Benson, Desirae Gifford and Morgan Stalzer and they finished in 11:09.71.

The Cardinals also placed second in the distance medley with Libby Shores, Kya Butler, Schilling and Malow. That group ran a season-best time of 4:45.64.

Newton did not win a field event but scored double points in the shot put and discus. Marissa Cunningham was the runner-up in the discus with a throw of 106-8 and Jayden Lukefahr finished fourth with a toss of 91-1.

In the shot put, Kealey Manning was the runner-up with a throw of 34-4 and Tierney Adams placed fifth with a toss of 30-11.

In the long jump, Shores finished fourth with a leap of 14-11 1/2. That was a season-best jump by more than nine inches.

Teams can only score points from two individuals but Newton went 2-3-4 in the 1,500 and 1-4-5 in the 400 hurdles.

Stalzer was third in the 1,500 with a season-best time of 6:06.25 and Gifford finished fourth in a season-best 6:17.96.

In the 400 hurdles, Beerends was fourth in 1:22.34 and Casse Adams finished fifth in a season-best 1:26.38.

Chloe Rorabaugh gave Newton double points in the 100 hurdles as she was third in a season-best 17.64. Benson also was fourth in the 800 in a season-best 2:44.85 and Clayton took fourth in the 400 in a season-best 1:09.

The Tigerhawks were the runner-up in three other individual events — Pleima (14.38) in the 200, Joslyn Dawson (13:38.78) in the 3,000 and Daytin Chadwick (4-4) in the high jump. Dawson’s time and Chadwick’s leap were both season-best performances.

Doty was third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:22.09 and C-M scored double points in the 3,000 and long jump.

Joslyn Chadwick placed fourth in the 3K with a season-best time of 14:57.21 and Abi Rawlins was sixth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 14-11.

Madison Riddle also placed fifth in the 200 in a season-best 29.72, Danica Linn was sixth in the 800 in 3:02.57 and Olivia Uecker placed in both the shot put and discus but could not score team points.

Uecker was fifth in the discus (87-4) as the Tigerhawks went 1-3-5 and she was sixth in the shot put (29-0) as C-M was 3-4-6.

The Tigerhawks were the runner-up in both the 4x200 and shuttle hurdle relays.

In the shuttle hurdle, Melany Vry, Underwood, Morgan Van Dyke and Doty ran a season-best 1:18.04.

The 4x200 team of Riddle, Mickayla Lind, Caylee Cunningham and Pleima finished second in a season-best 1:58.45.

The Hawks won the 4x200 with Carsyn McFarland, Aliya James, Korinne Jansen and Dylann Huyser in a season-best time of 1:55.67.

The winning distance medley relay team included Huyser, Korinne Jansen, Cally Gibbs and Alberts and they finished in a season-best 4:44.44.

L-S was second in the 4x100, 4x800 and sprint medley relays.

In the 4x100, the team of McFarland, Korinne Jansen, Reagan McFarland and Huyser finished in 54.12.

The 4x800 relay team of Cayler Noun Harder, Kinsley Tice, Meleisha Vos and Van Zante were second in 11:26.79.

The sprint medley relay team finished in 2:00.6 with Reagan McFarland, James, Carsyn McFarland and Alberts.

Allie Van Wyk and Sydney Jansen tied for second in the high jump with season-best leaps of 4-4. Korinne Jansen also took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-11.

The Hawks piled up double points in the 100, 800 and the 1,500, too.

In the 100, Morgan Jones (14.69) and Abby Roberts (15.07) were 5-6, Vos went a season-best 2:58.76 in the 800 to finish fifth and Tice finished the 1,500 fifth in 6:23.41.

Sydney Jansen ran a season-best 29.61 to finish fourth in the 200 and Tice was sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:10.8.
