Newton boys track finishes sixth, girls seventh at LHC meet

Cardinals shut out of win column in tough field

NORWALK — The Little Hawkeye Conference track and field meet is like a mini Class 3A state meet in a lot of ways.

The conference features some of the top track athletes in the state and Newton was shut out of the win column on Tuesday.

The Cardinal girls and boys each claimed three top-three finishes at Norwalk High School.

Jackson Mace-Maynard scored 14 points and Nate Maki had 9.5 as the Newton boys scored 48.5 points and finished sixth in the team race.

Addy Terpstra scored 11 points to lead the Newton girls and Alyssa Shannon added six points as the Cardinals scored 38 points in seventh.

Mace-Maynard was second in the 3,200-meter run and third in the 800. He set a new personal-best time in the two mile as he finished in 9 minutes, 57.61 seconds. His 800 time was clocked at 2:01.57.

Newton also was second in the 4x800 relay. The team of Derek Beiner, Jared Smith, Brennan Amos and Cody Klein completed the race in 8:33.43.

Maki was fourth in both the 100 and 200. He finished the 100 in 11.42 seconds and the 200 in 23.25.

Gavin Urias finished seventh in the long jump with a season-best leap of 18 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Dallas King took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 40-11 1/2.

The other top-eight finish came from Brody Bauer. He was eighth in the 400 hurdles in a career-best time of 1:00.19.

Indianola won the boys team championship with 173 points, edging runner-up Pella (168) by five points. Dallas Center-Grimes (122.5), Norwalk (106.5) and Pella Christian (50) completed the top five and Grinnell (34) and Oskaloosa (33.5) finished behind Newton (48.5).

In the girls’ team race, Indianola was the team champion with 143 points. DCG (131), Norwalk (128), Pella (118) and Oskaloosa (104) completed the top five.

Grinnell (45), Newton (38) and Pella Christian (31) rounded out the field.

Terpstra was second in the 100 hurdles as she finished in 16.53. She also was sixth in the 200 in 27.69. The 16.53 in the 100 hurdles is not her best time but still fast enough to be top 15 in Class 3A.

Chloe Rorabaugh gave the Cardinals double points in the 100 hurdles as she was eighth in 17.84.

Shannon finished third in the 800 and anchored the 4x800 relay to third. Her 800 time was clocked in a personal-best 2:23.99, which ranks 11th in 3A.

The Cardinals’ 4x800 relay team now ranks 19th in 3A after running a season-best 10:29.25. Newton’s team of Ashay Malow, Kate Muckler, Grace Benson and Shannon were third overall behind DCG and Norwalk.

DCG has the top current time in 3A and Norwalk’s best time ranks 18th in 4A.
