PELLA — Newton’s girls track and field team had plenty of PRs and season-best performances on Thursday during the Tulip Time Coed Invitational.
Led by a pair of second-place finishes, the Cardinals scored 66.83 points and finished fifth in the eight-team field.
Pella won the meet with 176 points, while Oskaloosa (145.33), Mount Pleasant (113) and Ottumwa (103.83) all eclipsed 100 points in the top four positions.
The rest of the field included Centerville (48), Pella Christian (48) and the Pella JV (29).
Newton finished in the top five in six individual events and were top four in three relays.
Ashay Malow had the lone runner-up finish in an individual event as she was second in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 40.3 seconds.
Kate Muckler and Kelsey Church were 3-5 in the 1,500. Muckler’s career-best time was clocked in 5:43 and Church ran a season-best time of 5:55.46.
Addy Terpstra was fourth in the 200 in a personal-best 27.44 seconds.
Kealey Manning finished fifth in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 36 feet, 6 1/2 inches, which ranks 19th in Class 3A. Grace Benson also was fifth in the 3,000 with a season-best time of 13:15.18.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Alyssa Beerends, JaQuay Priest, Chloe Rorabaugh and Terpstra ran a season-best time of 1:12.42. They finished second in the race and the time currently ranks 16th in 3A.
The distance medley and 4x100 relay both were fourth. The 4x100 relay included Priest, Terpstra, Libby Shores and Kynnedei Terpstra and they finished in 54.2. The distance medley relay team of Priest, Shores, Muckler and Malow were fourth in 4:52.96.
