Newton boys finish fifth at Tulip Time Coed

Cardinals claim two wins in Pella

PELLA — Nate Maki won the 200-meter dash, the Cardinals ran to a win in the distance medley relay and Newton’s boys track and field team place fifth at the Tulip Time Coed Invitational on Thursday.

Newton scored 69 points. The Cardinals won two events, finished second in two others and took third in a pair of relays, too.

Maki won the 200 in 22.94 seconds. He was second in the 100 in a season-best time of 11.27, which ranks 19th in Class 3A.

Individually, the Cardinals were top five in three other events. Brennan Amos was fourth in the 800 in 2 minutes, 9.7 seconds, Gavin Urias finished fourth in the long jump with a season-best leap of 18 feet, 2 3/4 inches and Brody Bauer took fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.27.

Newton won the distance medley in 3:48.05. That team included Maki, Collin Sharp, Amos and Treycen Garton.

Garton also anchored the 4x400 to third and the sprint medley relay to fourth. The 4x400 team of Derek Beiner, Cody Klein, Curtis Payne and Garton finished in 3:37.14 and the sprint medley team of Zane Biondi, Sharp, Bauer and Garton finished in 1:42.24.

The 4x800 relay team was second. That team of Amos, Beiner, Klein and Asher Wood finished in 8:58.49.

The 4x200 relay team of Biondi, A.J. Holdefer, Nathan Milburn and Sharp finished third in 1:41.08. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Payne, Urias, Bauer and Reese Hammons took fourth in a season-best time of 1:06.87.
