Newton boys golf scores sixth-place finish in Oskaloosa tourney

Walker ties for sixth at Edmundson Golf Course

OSKALOOSA — Newton’s boys golf team competed in a deep field at the Oskaloosa Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cardinals were one of 14 schools in the tournament and finished sixth after firing their best 18-hole score of the season.

Newton shot a 354 and edged conference rival Grinnell by three strokes for sixth. Norwalk won the meet with a 323 followed by Mount Pleasant (334), Winterset (344), Pella (348) and Oskaloosa (349).

“We are really coming around as a team,” Newton boys golf coach Pat Riley said. “We had five guys under 100 for the first time. Brody Cazett and Braydon Chance are starting to play competitive golf at a higher level. Walker and Ergenbright haven’t even played they’re best golf yet. They will continue to drop their scores. Pritchard is starting to be consistently in the 90s. Beerends continues to improve and Derek has been out with a dislocated shoulder. When we get him back we could be a pretty solid team.”

Newton was led by Ethan Walker, who finished in a tie for sixth with an 81. He was eighth on a cardback but shot a 37 on the back nine.

Lincoln Ergenbright finished tied for 17th and was 18th on a cardback with an 86.

The other two counting golfers were Braydon Chance (94) and Kinnick Pritchard (93) while Brody Cazett (97) and Garret Beerends (112) carded non-counting scores.

Pella’s Will Simpson was the medalist with a 77 and Mount Pleasant’s Brevin Wilson also shot a 77 as the runner-up.

The rest of the 14-team field included Washington (358), Fairfield (360), Nevada (372), Sigourney (375), Williamsburg (382), Pella Christian (390), Burlington Notre Dame (394), Fort Madison (406).

Cardinals compete in non-conference triangular

AMANA — Ergenbright finished in the top four of a non-conference triangular hosted by Clear Creek-Amana on Monday.

The Cardinals and Beckman Catholic both shot a 190 on the Amana Colonies Golf Course while CCA won the meet with a 174. Beckman Catholic’s JV carded a 188 and CCA’s JV shot a 199.

“I thought we played pretty well on a very difficult course with windy conditions,” Riley said. “I like where we are. We just have to continue to get better.”

Ergenbright shot a 43 to lead Newton. He was one of three golfers with that score and CCA’s Alex Courtright was the medalist with a 42.

Walker had a 45 for the Cardinals and the other two counting scores came from Cazett (48) and Pritchard (54). Beerends (58) and Chance (60) turned in non-counting scores.
