Newton girls track finishes fifth at East Marshall

Shannon, shuttle hurdle team claims wins in Le Grand

LE GRAND — Alyssa Shannon won an individual race for the first time this season, the shuttle hurdle relay team recorded a season-best time in a win and the Newton girls track and field team placed fifth in the East Marshall Girls Invitational on Thursday.

Shannon’s win in the 800-meter run helped the Cardinal junior score a team-high 11.5 points. Newton scored 77 points in fifth.

Bondurant-Farrar edged Oskaloosa 124-121 to win the meet. Union (81) and Nevada (77) rounded out the top five. The rest of the 13-team field included South Tama County (59), BLCUW (44), Greene County (44), East Marshall (36), Montezuma (35), Meskwaki Settlement School (20), HLV (15) and BGM (15).

Shannon’s season-best time in the 800 was clocked at 2 minutes, 32.48 seconds. The Cardinals won twice, were second in another event and placed third two other times.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Libby Shores, JaQuay Priest, Chloe Rorabaugh and Addy Terpstra got the other win in a season-best time of 1:13.72.

The runner-up finish came in the distance medley relay. The team of Priest, Chassidy Henwood, Ashay Malow and Grace Benson finished in 4:53.69.

The sprint medley relay team of Henwood, Terpstra, Kya Butler and Shannon were third in 2:01.77. Butler also placed third in the 400 in a season-best time of 1:07.02.

Terpstra finished fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.09 seconds. Gracie Clayton was fifth in the 400 hurdles in a season-best time of 1:17.07. Marissa Cunningham placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 90 feet, 3 inches.

The other fifth-place finish came in the 4x100 relay. The team of Butler, Terpstra, Shores and Kynnedei Terpstra finished in 53.79.

Kealey Manning also finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 31-10, Kelsey Church took sixth in the 3,000 with a season-best time of 13:12.37 and Malow was seventh in the 1,500 in a season-best time of 5:58.29.
