Smock leads L-S girls to fourth, PCM finishes fifth at Pella Christian

Mustangs, Hawks lose to pair of 3A programs

PELLA — PCM and Lynnville-Sully competed for the first time since ia.varsitybound.com released its track and field power rankings.

Both the L-S and PCM girls are ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes and they were separated by just two points on Tuesday at the Pella Christian Coed Invitational.

Greenlee Smock scored 25 points for the Hawks and Caitlin Alberts scored 15.5 as the Hawks were fourth with 82 points. PCM scored 80 points in fifth, led by 18 from Margo Chipps, 11 from Celeste Wagaman and 10 from Chelsea Bird.

The nine-team field featured a variety of schools. Class 3A Pella (176) and ADM (122) finished at the top and 1A Wayne (108) finished third.

The rest of the field including 2A Centerville (55), Pella Christian (50), Pleasantville (40) and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (8).

Smock led the area athletes. She won the 800- and 3,000-meter runs and was fourth in the 1,500.

She finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 40.91 seconds and Alberts was second in 2:41.09. Smock won the 3K in 12:18.97 and her time in the 1,500 was 5:50.89.

Alberts also finished third in the 400 with a time of 1:06.89.

The Hawks’ distance medley relay team was second as the foursome of Aliya James, Dylann Huyser, Megan Van Zante and Cayler Noun Harder finished in 5:04.27.

The 4x100 relay also was third. Reagan McFarland, James, Carsyn McFarland and Huyser finished in 54.67 seconds. The 4x800 relay team also was third as Alberts, Kinsley Tice, Van Zante and Noun Harder finished in 11:16.2.

Chipps led the Mustangs with a 400 hurdles win and a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles.

Chipps won the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:09.52 and took second in the 100 hurdles in 16.68. Bird finished third in the 100 hurdles in 17.64.

Wagaman also won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

The Mustangs were third in the 4x200 and shuttle hurdle relays. In the 4x200, Belle Hudnut, Reece Palm, Elle Davis and Alissa Ives finished in 2:05.19 and the shuttle hurdle team of Hudnut, Avery Houser, Eliana Buswell and Kate McClellen completed the race in 1:13.74.

Delaney Baird was fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:08.2, Bird finished fifth in the 100 in 13.76 and Ryan Bennett finished sixth in the 200 in 30.76.
