Cardinals’ 4x800 finish highlights Newton boys at Ottumwa

Newton boys track finishes second at Don Newell Classic

OTTUMWA — Newton’s time in the 4x800-meter relay at the 71st Annual Don Newell Classic is currently fast enough to earn a spot in the Drake Relays.

The top 16 times in the event qualify for next week’s annual even at Drake Stadium and the Cardinal foursome of Derek Beiner, Cody Klein, Treycen Garton and Jackson Mace-Maynard sits 11th at the time this article was published.

The Cardinals grabbed the win in the event, claimed two other victories and were top-three in 10 events total as they finished second in the team standings.

Newton scored 51 points in second, edging Burlington (49) by two points. Host Ottumwa (133) won the title with Des Moines East (37) finishing fourth in the four-team field.

Beiner and Klein ran in the 4x800 relay and then headed back to Newton to compete on the soccer pitch against Oskaloosa.

Before that, they helped Garton and Mace-Maynard run a time of 8 minutes, 15.06 seconds. It was a 1:21 faster than the runner-up and the 11th fastest time in the state so far.

The other wins for Newton came from Keith Moko in the high jump and Brennan Amos in the 400.

Moko won with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches and Amos was the 400 winner in 56.72. Amos also took third in the 800 with a time of 2:19.75.

The Cardinals’ three second-place finishes came in the shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Gavin Urias, Cole Swank, Curtis Payne and Reese Hammons finished in 1:07.97.

The sprint medley team of Zane Biondi, A.J. Holdefer, Nate Milburn and Brody Bauer finished in 1:46.66.

The distance medley relay team included Nate Maki, Collin Sharp, Payne and Mace-Maynard and they finished as the runner-up in 3:52.88.

Newton was third in three individual events. They doubled up in two of them. Presley Arnold was third in the 3,200 with a time of 12:55.32.

In the 110 high hurdles, Urias was third in 17.34 seconds and Hammons was fourth in 17.4.

In the discus, Nate Davies took third with a throw of 120 feet and Jaden Shannon finished fifth with a toss of 98-3.

The Cardinals doubled up in three other events. Sharp (12.02) was fifth and Biondi (12.07) finished sixth in the 100, Bauer (1:03.47) and Jordan Henderson (1:05.84) went 4-5 in the 400 hurdles and Dallas King (40-6) and Nelson Lopez (33-3) finished 4-6 in the shot put.

In the long jump, Jaden Dydell was sixth with a leap of 14-10.
