Boone hands Newton girls tennis first loss

Henwood gets Cardinals lone win

BOONE — Chassidy Henwood was the only Newton girls tennis player who found the win column during the Cardinals’ head-to-head dual with Boone on Monday.

Henwood won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, but Newton lost nine two-set matches and lost 10-1 overall.

The Cardinals dropped to 1-1 on the season. Their home opener is against Marshalltown at 4:15 p.m. on Friday at Aurora Heights Park.

Henwood won her singles match 6-0, 6-3 over Sophie Dierking. Henwood and Katie McConnell teamed up at No. 2 doubles and pushed Boone to three sets but lost 6-4, 4-6, (8-0) to Dierking and Bria Schwind.

The next closest match for Newton came at No. 4 doubles where Molly Lovan and Mae Van Dam lost 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) to Ella Patterson and Emylyn Hockemeier.

Maggie Garrett lost her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 7-5, Megan Lovan and Jerica Dafflitto both lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and McConnell and Molly Lovan each lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Garrett and Dafflitto teamed up at No. 1 doubles but lost 6-4, 6-3. Megan Lovan and Alyssa Shannon played No. 3 doubles and lost 6-0, 6-1 and Lauryn Garrett and Ella Swarts played No. 5 doubles and were defeated 6-1, 6-4.
