Newton boys win six events in track opener at Boone

Mace-Maynard runs impressive first-place time in 1,600-meter run

BOONE — Some strong first-meet performances led Newton’s boys track and field team to a third-place finish at the Boone High School Boys Invitational on Monday.

Jackson Mace-Maynard, Treycen Garton, Keith Moko and Nate Davies all won individual events and the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also ran to victory as the Cardinals scored 117 points in third.

Class 4A Fort Dodge won the meet with 168 points, while host Boone scored 140 in second. Des Moines North was fourth with 84 and West Marshall scored 58 in fifth to complete the field.

Mace-Maynard’s winning time in the 1,600-meter run was clocked at 4 minutes, 38.04 seconds. That time is just 14 seconds off the Drake Relays Blue Standard qualifying time.

Garton won the 800 in 2:06.3, Moko won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches and Nate Davies won the discus with a toss of 130-3.

The winning 4x400 team included Mace-Maynard, Cody Klein, Derek Beiner and Garton and they finished in 3:37.09.

The gold-medal 4x800 team featured Mace-Maynard, Beiner, Jared Smith and Garton and they won it with a time of 8:47.38. That time is 14 seconds off the Drake Relays Blue Standard qualifying time.

The Cardinals netted 13 top-three finishes but only one runner-up placing.

Reese Hammons was second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 17.51 seconds.

Individually, Nate Maki was third in the 200 in 23.65, Klein was third in the 400 with a time of 54.43 and Jaden Dydell placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.

Newton also earned double points in the 100, 200, 400 and discus.

Maki was fourth and Zay Arguello finished sixth in the 100 with times of 11.81 and 12.42, respectively. Arguello also placed sixth in the 200 in 25.14 and Smith was sixth in the 400 with a time of 57.34.

In the discus, Jaden Shannon joined Davies with a top-five finish in the discus as he was fifth with a toss of 105-10. Dallas King also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39-5.

Newton was third in the 4x100, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.

The 4x100 team included Maki, Moko, Zane Biondi and Arguello and they finished in 46.4. The foursome of Biondi, Smith, Moko and Klein finished the sprint medley relay in 1:41.34. The shuttle hurdle team of Dydell, Jordan Henderson, Hammons and Curtis Payne completed the race in 1:16.58.
