Three area girls collect all-district basketball recognition

IGCA awards PCM’s Baird, L-S duo with all-district hoops honor

PCM senior Lilli Baird earned her first all-district girls’ basketball honor recently when she was named to the Class 3A Southwest District team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Baird led the Mustangs in scoring, ranked second in assists, third in steals and fourth in rebounds this season and was one of 10 players on the Southwest District team.

Lynnville-Sully senior Cally Gibbs and junior Reagan McFarland also collected all-district honors in Class 1A. The Hawk duo were included on the 10-player Southeast District team.

Joining Baird on the 3A Southwest all-district team were Roland-Story’s Reagan Barkema, Chariton’s Avery Hall, Carroll Kuemper Catholic’s Cate Mayhall, Sioux City Bishop Heelan’s Kenly Meis, Nevada’s Sydney Mosinski, Des Moines Christian’s Moriah Prewitt, Atlantic’s Haley Rasmussen, West Marshall’s Katy Reyerson and Shenandoah’s Ava Wolf.

Roland-Story’s Justin Morton was voted 3A Southwest District Coach of the Year.

Baird averaged 11.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 24 percent from the floor, 27 percent from 3-point range and 72.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Baird, who started all 21 PCM games, made 31 3-pointers this season.

She finished her career with 704 points.

Gibbs and McFarland were joined on the 1A Southeast District team by Montezuma’s Elise Boulton and Dylan Holland, Collins-Maxwell’s Reagan Franzen, Winfield-Mount Union’s Bradie Buffington and Farrah Nelson, North Mahaska’s Layla Hargis and Addie Schilling and Sigourney’s Kaylee Weber.

Winfield-Mount Union’s Mitch Wachs was named 1A Southeast District Coach of the Year.

Gibbs averaged 11.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game, leading the Hawks to a 17-4 record.

Gibbs also shot 39 percent from the floor, 31.1 percent from 3-point range and 72.5 percent from the line.

McFarland averaged 10.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game. She shot 40.4 percent from the floor, 35.5 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the foul line.

McFarland was 38-of-107 from long range.
