Four Tigerhawks advance to wrestling districts

Seventh-ranked Strohmeyer wins 113-pound championship

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo senior Noah Strohmeyer is trying to become just the second three-time state wrestling qualifier for the Tigerhawks this winter.

After an impressive finish at the Class 1A Sectional 9 tournament, Strohmeyer is one step closer to that goal.

Strohmeyer won the 113-pound weight bracket as the Tigerhawks hosted sectionals for the first time in school history. Three teammates will join Strohmeyer at next week’s district meet in Pleasantville as John McGill (126), Hunter Stevens (160) and Kenny Schlosser (285) all were runner-ups in their weight classes.

Colfax-Mingo finished sixth in the team race with 119 points. Pleasantville (195) edged Interstate 35 (191.5) for the sectional title and the rest of the top five included Southeast Warren (176), Martensdale-St. Marys (131) and Lynnville-Sully (125). Collins-Maxwell (71) also competed.

Class 1A No. 7 Strohmeyer won his 113-pound bracket after winning once by fall and another time by major decision. He’s now 32-4 on the season.

McGill improved to 37-6 at 126 after going 1-1 on the day. He won his first match by fall and lost by fall in the championship to 1A No. 10 Ryan Steinlage of I-35.

Stevens (30-10) also was 1-1 on the day at 160. He won by fall and lost in the finals by fall to sixth-ranked Cael Cassady of Martensdale-St. Marys.

Schlosser (20-6) got the biggest win of the day as he advanced to the championship match at 285 after pinning No. 8 Cristian Roquet (22-4) of I-35 in the semifinals. He lost by fall to Pleasantville’s Matthew Kaufman (28-3) in the finals but advanced as the runner-up.

No other Tigerhawk wrestler finished in the top three. Danica Linn (120) and Ben Keeney (220) both placed fourth, Austin Lane (132) and Shane Aikin (182) were fifth and Cavan Magnuson (138) and Trystin Anderson (170) finished sixth. Kylie Doty (145) and Melany Vry (152) also competed for the Tigerhawks.
