NCMP finishes second at NCSC meet

Cardinals win three events, edge Boone for runner-up honors

BOONE — The Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella boys’ swim team brought just 12 swimmers to the North Central Swim Conference meet on Saturday.

And the Cardinals returned home without knowing how they fared as the NCSC meet was broken up into two sites and the second site was postponed to Monday.

NCMP went to Boone with Grinnell and Centerville, while the other four programs — Decorah, Williamsburg, Vinton-Shellsburg and Oskaloosa — all competed at Williamsburg a few days later.

In the end, NCMP recorded three wins, six top-three finishes and 21 season-best times.

Decorah won the conference championship with 421 points, but NCMP edged Boone for second place. The Cardinals had 322 points, while Toreadors finished with 321.

The rest of the eight-team field included Vinton-Shellsburg (300), Grinnell (259), Centerville (216), Williamsburg (205) and Oskaloosa (89).

The individual victories for NCMP came from seniors Henry Jensen and Jaden Dydell.

Jensen won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 55.53 seconds. He also placed third in the 500 freestyle in a season-best time of 5:16.07. Dydell won the 50 freestyle in 22.83 seconds and finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.92.

The other top-three individual finish came from Eli Eekhoff as he was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.18.

The final win for the Cardinals came in the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Clay Lamb, Eekhoff, Jensen and Dydell won the race in a season-best 3:32.78.

Devin Lamb finished sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:09.41 and he was seventh in the 500 freestyle in 5:53.64.

Clay Lamb was sixth in the 100 butterfly. He finished in 1:00.05. Landon Heisdorffer finished seventh in the 200 IM (season-best 2:33.32) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (season-best 6:03.29), Brady Comer was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (season-best 1:13.21) and Jonah Brown finished eighth in the 200 IM (season-best 2:34.74).

NCMP finished fifth and sixth in the other two relays but names for those relays were unavailable at press time. The 200 medley relay was fifth in 1:50.57 and the 200 freestyle relay placed sixth in 1:43.76.
