L-S girls start fast, down SICL foe Colfax-Mingo

Hawks improve to 12-2 after fifth straight win

SULLY — A strong start allowed Lynnville-Sully’s girls’ basketball team to coast to a double-digit win over Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday night.

The Hawks led by 11 after one, improved the lead to 18 at halftime and downed the Tigerhawks 55-42 at home during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The Hawks won despite shooting just 38 percent from the floor. They out-rebounded C-M 40-27, scored 13 second-chance points and recorded 14 bench points.

“It was a win, but we didn’t execute our offensive or defensive game plan,” L-S girls’ coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We seemed a step slow. (Colfax-Mingo) was the more aggressive team, and we didn’t match their intensity.”

Lynnville-Sully (12-2 overall, 8-2 in conference play) led 19-8 after one quarter and extended the lead to 33-14 at halftime. C-M won the third quarter 14-8 and both teams scored 14 points in the fourth.

“A couple of stretches when we got out and applied ball pressure, caused some turnovers and converted them into easy points was the difference,” Hulsing said.

Colfax-Mingo (4-10, 4-8) shot 42 percent from the floor, made 3-of-10 from outside and was 1-of-4 from the line. The Tigerhawks committed 17 turnovers.

It was the Hawks’ fifth straight win. Colfax-Mingo has dropped three straight.

Cally Gibbs led the Hawks with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Reagan McFarland added 10 points and four rebounds.

Meleisha Vos finished with eight points and six rebounds, Megan Van Zante had seven points and six rebounds and Korinne Jansen chipped in four points, three rebounds and four assists.

Caitlin Alberts scored nine points and Krystal Van Dyke and Haylei Routier each grabbed three boards.

Colfax-Mingo was led by Carley Underwood, who finished with a game-high 17 points and added four rebounds and seven assists.

Brennan Rhone finished with nine points, four rebounds and three blocks, Caylee Cunningham had four points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals and Abi Rawlins scored eight points. Kyra Lester grabbed seven boards.
