Newton boys hang tough against ranked DCG

Slow start plagues Cardinal girls in loss to Mustangs

GRIMES — Newton’s boys’ basketball team led Class 3A No. 6 Dallas Center-Grimes after one quarter and pushed the Mustangs for the entire 32 minutes.

Unfortunately, the second quarter got away from the Cardinals and DCG pulled out a 57-49 home win during Little Hawkeye Conference action on Monday.

“Overall, we played very well,” Newton head boys’ coach Jason Carter said. “I thought we competed well from the beginning to the end of the game.

“We shot 60 percent from 2-point range. I thought we did a better job of attacking the hoop and finding open guys around the basket.”

Newton led 10-9 after one and was outscored by just one point in the second half. But a 20-12 surplus in the second allowed DCG (9-1 overall, 6-1 in the LHC) to secure the conference victory.

Adam Mattes led the Cardinals with 18 points and five rebounds and Brody Bauer tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Newton (4-6, 2-5) also got seven points and four assists from Jake Ingle, Kael Swarts and Logan Schilling each had five points and three rebounds and Zay Arguello swiped three steals.

The Cardinals shot 46 percent from the floor, were 6-of-21 from 3-point range and made 1-of-3 from the foul line.

“We limited turnovers and rebounded well,” Carter said. “If we find our rhythm with our perimeter shooting, I really think it will open things up for us offensively. We have plenty of capable shooters on this team and it’s only a matter of time before more shots start to fall.”

DCG had a significant advantage in free throws made and attempted as the Mustangs were 12-of-22. The Mustangs hit 57 percent from the floor and were 5-of-10 from 3-point range.

Cole Glasgow scored 16 points and Luke Rankin tallied 14 points and seven assists to lead the Mustangs.

GIRLS

Dallas Center-Grimes 76, Newton 43

Class 4A No. 4 DCG jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during a 76-43 home win over Newton in girls’ basketball action on Monday.

The Mustangs (11-2, 6-1) led the LHC game 27-11 after one frame and went in front 45-23 at halftime.

“We started out well and then our defense got lax,” Newton girls’ coach Eric Vander Velden said. “We needed more pressure on the ball and didn’t have great closeouts on their shooters. When they can play inside and outside, it’s hard to contain a great team.”

Chassidy Henwood led the Cardinals (2-10, 0-7) with nine points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Audrey Rausch and Kealey Manning each scored nine points, Meg Callaghan tallied six points and five rebounds and Victoria Reynolds chipped in six points and three assists.

Aurora Nehring returned to action and blocked four shots. Rausch was injured with about four minutes to go in the game and is out indefinitely.

It was the Mustangs’ fifth straight win.
