Ankeny’s depth too much for Newton girls swimming

Barton’s state standard qualifying time leads Cardinals to second at road quadrangular

Harper Barton

ANKENY — Harper Barton and Tori White won a pair of individual events and the Newton girls swim team registered seven wins total, but Ankeny’s depth was too much during the Cardinals’ road quadrangular on Thursday.

The host Hawks were winners of five events, but they also tripled up in eight races and scored 648 points at the top of the standings at the Trail Point Aquatics and Wellness Center.

Tori White

Newton scored 496 points in second, and the rest of the field included Des Moines Roosevel (424) and Indianola (323).

Harper Barton posted a state standard qualifying time in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, while White won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

The Cardinals also won the 200 freestyle relay, Alexa Van Maanen secured a victory in the 100 breaststroke and Reid McCloud posted a winning time in the 500 freestyle.

Alexa Van Maanen

The winning 200 freestyle relay team included Harper Barton, White, Temple Barton and McCloud, and they won the race in 1 minute, 45.6 seconds.

The same foursome was second in the 400 freestyle relay. Harper Barton, Temple Barton, White and McCloud posted a time of 3:48.34, which was .14 seconds behind the winning team from Ankeny.

Newton was third in the 200 medley relay. That group included Emalee Weuve, Van Maanen, Jullia Nedder and Kimberlee Miller. They posted a time of 2:07.97.

Temple Barton

Harper Barton’s state standard qualifying time in the 50 freestyle was clocked in 24.89 seconds. McCloud was fifth in 27.74, but she was only 1.2 seconds back of second.

Barton’s time moved her up to 13th in the state, and she won the 100 freestyle in 54.52. That’s not a season-best time but still fast enough to be under the state’s standard qualifying time.

Temple Barton placed third in the 100 freestyle in 58.83 and took second in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.46. Weuve placed fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.4.

Reid McCloud

White won the 200 IM in 2:22.05 and was the winner in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.3.

Van Maanen’s win in the 100 breaststroke was clocked in 1:18.35. She also was sixth in the 200 IM in 2:36.

McCloud won the 500 freestyle in 5:34.4 and Nedder took third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.8.

Ankeny was 1-2 in the 200 medley relay, placed 1-2-3 in 1-meter diving and finished 1-3-4 in the 200 freestyle. The Hawks also were 1-2-4 in the 100 fly, 2-3-4-5 in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and ended up 2-3-4 in the 50 freestyle.
